Jake Sully is a Marine. After an injury during a war in Venezuela he is left paraplegic, his veterans benefits do not cover the necessary surgery to allow him to walk again.

His twin brother is killed during a mugging. His brother was a scientist set to work in the Avatar Program on Pandora. As they share a unique genetic make-up that the expensive Avatar is coded to mesh with, Jake is recruited to fill his brothers shoes.

Although, Jake begins his career as an Avatar/Na'Vi hybrid, secretly working to subvert the Na'Vi clan and their HomeTree, he is quickly enamored by their way of life and turns against his militaristic, capitalistic sponsors.
