Common Reasons why HubPages Sucks

So something forced you to search for "Hubpages Sucks," you're disgruntled, hopeless and broke...which of the common unfounded, ill-informed and downright asinine complaints fits you?

Complaint:

My hub was flagged and unpublished for being "low quality,"overly promotional" and/or having "excessive affiliate links"

Response:

Low Quality : You're an idiot or a person of very little words, so listen up Calvin Coolidge, write a few more words, the truth is hubs get published and appreciated at an ESL level quite often, your "low quality/sub standard" issue will drop away if you can manage to write at least 300 words. Here's a tip, aim for a minimum of 500, no matter where your publishing online.

Overly Promotional:So you wrote a hub that simply promotes one site and you got caught for it. Why complain? You are not an internet newbie or you wouldnt be trying to create a landing page that sends traffic elsewhere. Use your brain, keep the links within the rules .. 2 per domain, that is sufficient for promotion purposes anyways. Add some more value to the hub..throw in some videos, links to related content, you can do it.

Excessive Affiliate Links: ..duh,

Hubpages Sucks, No college for me !

Check out these actual results from an intelligent writer and marketer who managed to not only write 100 quality hubs but profit greatly from them

See the actual screenshots at The Keyword Academy Blog

I understand you were lazy, foolish and/or impatient last time, thats alright, your welcome to try it again the right way

Sign Up for HubPages and do it right this time

Complaint: HubPages isnt paying me enough, HubPages should pay me for my work. How dare they demand unique content for free!

Response: HubPages doesnt pay you a thing, your Hubs suggested affiliation lies with adsense, amazon, ebay and if your a really greedy bastard, Kontera. Hubs creates an easy way to apply and integrate these monetization methods with your writing.

In return, you share 40% of your impressions with HubPages, not revenue , so 40% of the time HubPages gets a chance to earn a click or a sale.

As an aside, a decent clickthrough in adsense is 4%, my average conversion rate for Amazon products is in the 4% range, that conversion equates to only 6% of the sale price. None of this has anything to do with HubPages, but a 1-4% ctr on 40% of my traffic is no great chunk of change.

If you landed on this page with any of the misconceptions stated, you're a noob, a complete fool in the the land of making money online or completely incapable of reading a couple FAQ's...so if you think you can do better with your unique content...good luck, its not likely, if you cant succeed with the Hubs platfom you stand very little chance on your own. You will just end up an angry dissenter in some forgotten thread.

Complaint: HubPages Sucks! My links are nofollow, what a waste of time

Response: Get your Personal HUbscore above 75 and your individual hubs above 40. I have no idea how you could fall that low so I have very little advice. If you publish 10 unique hubs over 500 words each I am sure you will fit the simple requirements to stay in the dofollow zone.

Complaint: The forum folk drove me out so I unpublished all my work and left

Response: I really, really dont want to dignify this with a response. But since its such a painfully common complaint *sigh* , The "make money" aspect that drove your initial interest into HubPages has absolutely nothing to do with the playground or social aspect that exists in the forums...if your need in the forum is help in a hubpages or internet marketing concept, your pretty likely to find your answer with a simple forum search. Since I already know, you will not attempt to search. I assure you, if you post your question in the help sections of the forum, your help will arrive.

Now if you choose to debate about life, the universe and everything or feel like "Being the last one to post," or "Lets count to bazillion"...go right ahead, you wont make a cent doing it, you wont gain a single brain cell and you might get into a cyber-brawl with someone else who isn't in the mood to write and may have some odd desire to let off some cyber-steam..c'mon really, Its the internet..

But..on the other hand...there is amazing camaraderie that can be found on the Hub Forums unlike any Ive seen before, but you cant expect every single thread and every single profile to stand up to the high standards that some have set.

The Truth about Why HubPages Sucks

I dont know where you gained your preconceptions. Most likely you were duped by the latest e-book or online guru into believing you can build a virtual cash machine with no effort and use Hubpages as a part of the process.

Lets evaluate what claims Hubpages actually does make in official literature and advertising:

. Anyone can be a part of the HubPages community, a leading source of answers and expert content on the web, where even new authors can enjoy hundreds or even thousands of readers. Authors can even earn money through online ads displayed on their hubs. The site's easy-to-use features allow authors to include pictures, videos, links, polls, quizzes and more in their hubs without needing to know any Web programming

and according to Wikipedia

HubPages earns revenue through Google Adsense ads which appear on Hubs. They can also earn income by opting to include Kontera contextual ads, or by using eBay and Amazon.com advertising capsules. In each case, the Hubber must be a member of the corresponding affiliate program as an individual, because income is paid directly by the affilate company, not by HubPages. The 60:40 revenue split is achieved by alternating the code used in advertisements: the Hubber's code is displayed 60% of the time, and HubPages' code 40%.

The Field of Dreams Philosophy

"If you build it, they will come"

Fat chance, buddy. A lot of complaints about making money online and even specific complaints relevant to why, supposedly, Hubpages Sucks...relates to a completely unbelievable level of naivete that exits in the "make money" and "make money writing" aspect of the noob online world.

People seem to truly believe that they can write a fantastic piece of prose about their cat, 'Mousey" and solely by the merits of their sentence structure and syntax the shekels will start rolling in.

Lets break it to you, bluntly...what world do you live in? Can you honestly say that the music that plays on the radio is the best most qualified art in the world? Do the movies that hit your local superplex seem like they were written by geniuses? How much money did Van Gogh die with?

Shakespeare could have written "Othello" in a composition book and snuck it into the local library shelves..How many people would find it without being properly categorized? How many would look for it without proper promotion?

If you build it and leave...it will just sit there

Hubpages unlike any other location I know does allow for a variant of this philosophy..."if they are looking for it and you build it...they will come" ...this isn't true in the rest of the discovered online world

Da Vinci vs. Van Gogh

Writing for money online is unlike any other publishing platform. When you self publish and self promote you have to learn how to wear a lot of hats.

DaVinci vs Van Gogh, Why arent I making money from Adsense

Perhaps, this isnt your game..maybe your the type that will always work for someone else? If you need a fixed payment immediately at a set price than the following resources should be helpful

Why you should be my referral ?

If you looked through my portfolio of published hubs you would see a lot of articles relate to online promotion and backlink generating methods...well, Ive had an unspoken policy for quite a while. All of my referrals, upon publishing 10 hubs, are integarted into my backlink and promotion campaigns, I figure the boost I can create may help spur that occassional hubber that creates hundreds of hubs....since HubPages will share there portion of impressions with me, this is tantamount to promoting myself.

Success Stories on Hubpages

Hubpages draws a very diverse crowd, some examples of people that are not only creating an income but also take the time to help others do the same with no benefits for doing so,of these examples,

  • one has cleared 1000/monthly if not more at a regular basis via strong marketing knowledge and an absolutely amazing output.
  • One has stated a monthly income exceeding 300 USD with less than 20 Hubs Published and has extremely high SERP rankings for what would seem to be near impossible terms.
  • One has cleared 100 daily on many occasions and easily reaches payout with all affiliate options with Hubpages in addition to other monetization methods.
  • One has an impressive presence at just about every online publishing platform on the net, yet still continues to publish regularly on Hubpages.
  • Another, may be the reason you were driven out of the religion forum but also has written some of the most honest and helpful "make money" and "how to hub" hubs out there.
  • Another, also has a strong cross platform presence, runs a brick and mortar business and was recently commended in the "payout chronicles".
  • Another, although well beloved, is forever banned from the forums yet each month churns out massive amounts of quality content and has traffic views that resemble the Eiffel tower (well ,half the tower)
  • Another has succeeded in their personal goal of paying their monthly rent via HubPages income

There are many other success stories and many, many more helpful Hubpage users. i know for a fact that if you jumped into the forums and said "hey, will someone mentor me" or anything along that lines that many would offer and they would be knowledgeable folk...Ive seen it happen.

A final thought...yes, I used degrading terms like asinine and idiot throughout this Hub, whats the lesson ?, Im an idiot too. But, since I paid attention and kept my ears open and had a little patience, this idiot makes money on Hubpages...if this idiot can do it, why cant you?

Fellow Hubbers, in a community effort to show off the power of the HubPages platform , should you find the time or the desire please share among the various options available below, particularly "Digg"(click that link to Digg this now)

Backlinks would be most appreciated as 'Hubpages Sucks" or "hubpages Scam"...within the month I bet between those stated to be using these terms we could completely own the first page of Google for perpetuity

"The "make money" aspect that drove your initial interest into HubPages has absolutely nothing to do with the playground or social aspect that exists in the forums."

This is so true. I'm still befuddled by the Hubbers who unpublish all their Hubs simply because of some upset in the forums.

skyfire profile image

I've also made hub "Why people get frustrated with hubpages?". Not wanted to self-promote but thought that others should look into this. I think hubs on these topics created by hubbers will surely clear some concepts to those who are having trouble with hubpages.

One more problem is that people compare hubpages with helium and associated content, they need to know that it is not site that pays upfront or PPV for content.

Brash ... a bit angry in tone ... but all very true!

I like to candy coat things to make them more palatable, but sometimes the bitter pill cures the illness better.

And to see if 'Hubpages really sucks!', I looked up every dissenting thread I could find and found that every single banning I could find mentioned on the internet revolved around a past member violating the Google terms of service, which I posted for all to see in one of my latest hubs.

And for those who got the boot ... consider this ... By Hubpages getting to you first and giving you the ace they saved your Google Adsense affiliation so you could use it elsewhere.

For all those who think Hubpages really sucks, let's have an experiment ... shall we?

Pay for your own site and post the same thing here that got you banned from Hubpages. Then, email Google and ask them to look at your site to see if it's within their policy.

When they email you back 'no!' you can come back and apologize to the good people who saw to it you got to keep your Adsense account (and any already made earnings), rather than allowing you to be banned from Adsense for life.

Trust me ... if you lose Adsense it's darned near impossible to get it back. Not impossible ... bat darned near it!

And so, I hereby approve this message, I'm proud to be mentioned in it, and those who still hate Hubpages need to take my challenge.

-Enuf said!-

(and that's probably the one and only time you will ever hear me use a mean-spirited tone, but dag nabbit - I'm mad!) :)

Here's the rub... a person complains about being flagged for a hub being substandard, but they haven't been flagged at all. It's an automated system warning. A WARNING.

"WARNING: This hub is at risk of being flagged Substandard."

It quite plainly says (after clearly saying 'warning') that the hub is 'at risk'.

So anyone getting their panties in a twist because big bad HubPages Inc has pointed the bone at them and screamed 'substandard!' need to take a few deep breaths, and start researching, writing and editing their content and publish their hub when they're right and ready to go.

A good synopsis of some of the pitfalls - I will have to get you to write a similar article for the freelance boards! They have much the same issues with high expectations and the 'get rich quick' without doing any work.

The only thing that I am slightly concerned about is that this whole scenario will open up the whole Us vs Them debate, as SweetiePie pointed out on the notorious blog.

Hopefully, we can nip that in the bud if fractures begin to appear - I know that you and Yoshi were at the forefront of repairing the damage the last time it occurred :)

I hate it when people shout scam when they don't give things a proper try and just assume that what others tell them about using these hubpages as landing pages is exactly what you should do and not adhere to the rules.

But at least it clears the way for those who aren't lazy to just get on with it and have a good go at this hubpages platform, writing and researching for new hubpages has become a weekly if not daily routine for me and many others here.

sunforged, as always, I appreciate your contribution to the HubPages community.

Regarding the recent “HubPages suck” pgrundy blog post: It’s been on my mind a bit, in part because of something she said in a forum post before she deleted her account. She indicated that her AdSense earnings had dropped to zero. My impression was that she literally meant not one penny, which I found unlikely. Given the number of hubs she had, despite not being commercial, like power earners, I’m thinking she should still have been earning from a few pennies up to a dollar or two most days. I wondered if there could have been a glitch in her AdSense acct, and maybe it got turned off.

I don’t understand ANYONE deleting all of their hubs. Why not leave them and collect some AdSense money instead of none. Forget nose, this is like cutting off your dick to spite your face.

To chime in on Darkside’s comment about warnings. I had a hub warning for potentially overly promotional. As it turns out, it was because I had used a lot of bolded words and phrases. I was told this could not be the reason, but guess what, it was. I unbolded the terms and all was well. Maybe a glitch, maybe even a glitch with my hub profile. Since then, I have had another hub with lots of bolded words, got the warning, ignored it, and all has been well for several months.

An amazingly accurate hub. Wow... I enjoyed this one and noticed some things about me that I have been working on changing. My big thing is promoting other sites and not trying to write what I like. At first, I thought that I could write about anything and make money. I was wrong, or so I thought until I read a couple of other success stories on hubpages. Now, I am just writing articles pertaining to things I have had experience with and much of which have high CPC payout... Those life experiences I have had... Who would've thought there would have been so much to gain from them through Adsense? I agree with you 100% and then some... Just write about your experiences and have fun with no worries about money... You'll thank yourself later.

First off thanks everybody, I really appreciate the quality and value you added to this tongue in cheek hub with your insights, your comments could be a "how-to" comment in its own.

Ill try and respond to any direct questions in reverse here.

@whcobb, Many people would feel your comment is devalued by sticking that link into it! You should be aware that your profile name on this comment already has that exact link in it. Im ok with it, because your comment includes one of my favorite quotes..so well done, you got by my BS filter. Thanks for your insights.

@rosemary

I tried to not directly involve any of the "current events" in this hub, you know sticking to "evergreen," I dont fully understand the motivations myself. 6 months back i wrote this article on using alternate writing sites for ideas and as a combined system of making as much cash as possible off of one idea.

.she was the first to comment, so it seems her dissatisfaction has been along time coming. Im very patient with talented artists..so I have nothing negative to say about the situation, frustration can lead to all sorts of unexplainable actions.

@Lilyrose, I am not a good example of a Hubpages mentor,as I run around like a headless chicken with the impossible amount of work I have scheduled for myself. I sometimes lose very important email even though its highly tagged and filtered..BUT, i will always try and answer any question you send me! and if your very serious, I can ask/suggest the couple of people I know DO mentor on normal basis.

@Sufi, Its always an honor to have you stop by. If i was doing a list of Hubbers to look for as examples of "quality" and "talent" which of course isnt always synonymous with the monetary aspect I was referring to in this hub you would surely top it.!

Gotta run and walk the dogs, will be back!

I would say second from last, actually... that was pretty obvious ;) I know two hubbers who are now regularly taking over $1500 per month if that makes your list any better! (from the horses mouths, in the past two weeks). I dont really miss the forums, at least when I dont read them, its only when I see a newbie asking a question and then 10 people giving them bad advice... I have emailed two people today to respond to their forum threads! I would take a punt on hubpages allowing me back on the forum if I asked nicely enough, going to leave that for at least a few weeks though, enjoying the productivity! Six hubs today, that would have been more like two hubs had I been allowed to post on the forums!

Cheers, Ry.

Shucks, sunforged - you embarrass me with praise. I think that I am in serious danger of developing a mancrush! How is the wife +1 doing, BTW?

Whilst I don't know much about marketing or SEO, the problems faced by pro-writers are exactly the same as the ones faced by the marketers. Making money requires hard-work and an unending willingness to learn - a little self-promotion, too.

These are tough times, but I have the firm belief that the net is going through a self-correction phase. No evidence, of course, only anecdotes and personal experience, but I have a little optimism, for the first time in years. :)

The 'cutting off the dick to spite the face comment' - whilst it made me chuckle, it does raise an interesting point. Suffice to say that I think that people want to make a completely clean break with the past, sometimes.

Great read, found this by accident when surfing around and had to have a read... I have not been here very long but even I can see that the people doing the complaining are the ones that just expect people to throw money at them without doing any work...

I'm not making money (yet) and i don't expect to for some time, but I am sure that if I persevere within my niche I will eventually gain a respectable little payback..

Nothing for nothing as they say, I enjoy what I am doing on here! It's not "hard work" it's fun, better than the day job that's for sure...

Hey Sunforged,

I am now a fan of yours and look forward to participating in the new 60 Day challenge out there. I clicked on the link to this article because I wondered at why anyone would consider HubPages a scam. When I read the introductory literature upon signing up, I was aware of what I was getting myself into and learned from the process of creating my hubs, signing up for the AdSense and Amazon affiliage programs, and spent much time and labor creating the related links to specific books on Amazon that I wished to promote. Now I have embarked on using the RSS feed system to promote my work, as well.

Each time I publish a hub, I announce it on Facebook. My next one is about home-schooling my daughter and I plan to announce its publication both on Facebook and on the home-schooling forums I belong to...and hopefully some people will click on the Amazon ads and buy the products they need that way, thus supporting me as a writer. I am still here because of the welcoming spirit, encouragement, and the vehicle for writing from both my heart and head (and soul) with the potential to generate income to pay for materials for each year of home-schooling my daughter. Perhaps I'll develop some of my articles into pieces that are publishable in magazines, or will be adopted by a book publisher. I am grateful for having a chance at establishing myself at the launching pad of Hub Pages! Thanks again, Sunforged. :0)

Well done and I think that the problem is that folks nowadays want instant gratification in all things. If they don't make money within 3 days, they term the site to be at fault.

No worries while the rest of us plod steadily along and just get better at our craft. It is a shame though that there are such cry babies out there but life is full of them on so many levels. What happened to the concept of you actually have to WORK at something to be any good at it?

I don't have much more to add to an already complete Hub, so I'll just say, "one more 'up vote' on this one". (Even if a site isn't right for one person for one reason or another, it doesn't mean the site "sucks". )

Sunny Robinson profile image

Oh I forgot all about this! I remember reading this and nodding my head, even as a newbie (and again, still really a newbie). Just randomly making money seems too good to be true, so I feel so much more comfortable having to work harder on the net for my earns.

I came across this again just now from that forum post on "Hubpages Suck". It's good to remind people every now and then, and especially newbies just coming across this, what this is really all about.

As usual, sunforged, I'm so impressed with your writing and bluntness. I don't know if I told you that before.

Well hello all. I joined Hub-pages recently. While I have no great income expectations, I do see it as an opportunity to practice writing and craft my style. Those of you who have not made a million dollars need to get a grip and remember, this is the internet. You are competing with hundreds of thousands of writers, possibly millions in the world wide market. If you have been on here oh say, 3 months, and have not made money and want to complain, then you need to become patient and look at what you have written. I have only 2 hubs posted to date and have re-read and edited them more than once. I have one follower and two comments, all positive. I am happy. I know that it takes some time. I have many writing projects, some of which will never be published here. Real money in this environment takes talent, great talent. Uniqueness is key. Create a persona for your self, an image, that people will take a second look at. In other words, your pride needs to be put aside, your creativity begins with your name and look, the rest begins with style and practice. Many people in the entertainment and writing industry do not use their real names or any other information about who the really are. Gene Simmons is rich and famous and does not use his god given birth name, and guess what, he does not care and neither does his family. So go back to square one and try again or maybe just hit the bricks and find a job in this godforsaken economy. Then come back to your computer with your new found inspiration and impress some body, any body. Even if it is only two people, consider your self lucky that some one likes your work!

Every one would do well to remember that all successful business stands on the foundation of morality.

failure doesn't mean you are a failure it just means you haven't succeeded yet.

If you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work.

Just because something doesn't do what you planned it to do doesn't mean it's useless.

because sooner or later, those who win are those who think they can.

Sunforged,

The use of a Hub as a platform for 'awesome sarcasm' on a controversial but extremely important subject is greatly needed for a platform that we all greatly appreciate. Hell if we didn't appreciate it and thought HubPages was a 'scam' ourselves, we would get out of Dodge too.

I like this Hub due to three reasons, great to show newbies what using this site is NOT about and I like to show people this Hub that think using HubPages or similar sites are scams.

Thirdly this Hub covers a brand of humor not too dissimilar to my own, so it tickles me in all the right humor places :)

Wow. I knew some people wer radical about making money on their hubs but DAMN! Is it really that important to those people to get 100 kajillion dollars on their crap content?

Me? I write what I like, stuff that interests me, and if I make anything - good. If not, at least there are some folks reading and getting a little entertainment.

E Marie 13 months ago

I think a lot of people get frustrated because the reality is if they are writing they want to get paid. Which isn't unusual. Also a lot of people probably read that blogging is the new hot thing to make money so they try it and then when they don't get paid they blame it on hubpages rather than adsense. They don't realize that hubpages is a place to share stories or just to work on your writing or to give some useful information. The whole adsense getting paid part is just a bonus if you can call it that. However, I get their frustrations if they came on here looking to make a little pocket change. I get that they take off their hubs because why should google make money off of their blogs when they aren't even making money off of their blogs?

This hub was very informative, a bit angry in tone and in a way overzealous about hubpages, but very accurate.

Finaaly someone someone who can put some sense into these people who think Hubpages sucks.

Robinbird_57 12 months ago

Well this is going to make the hub-experts laugh, but here's how I created my first , and only published Hub.

I was having trouble with my Dish Network -- it would stop showing the menu, or lose the sound. So I googgled the issue and did find help here and there, but not in one place. So, after fixing my system, I ran across an advert for "create a hubpage", so I did. My motivation? Well I admit I write, I want to write, want to sell writing -- not necessarily online though ( a book really), but beyond writing, I am a computer tech, and thinking like one, and working on a help support line... I thought, well, people rather find the answer fast, fix it themselves than always calling the DISH or cable company. So, nice to have say 10 ways to fix dish or cable before you call tech support handy. So I wrote it, my first hub. To get that info out in one place... to take the stress out of that situation. NOT to make a penny, but to share info. But after reading this, I see I could do both, write to share info, AND maybe, if good enough, make a bit of money for my time/ energy and ... um talent. Like anything else though, if you have no talent, put no energy into it, and your work doesn't give value -- you will fail! (and so you should)

Seems I got involved for the point of sharing info, and I hope that is a better way in, than say... getting in for making money and THEN deciding what can I throw up there?

(no pun intended)

BTW I searched Hubpages to share the link with a friend, and the shadowy " hubpages sucks" was suggested -- BY GOOGLE search! That is sooooooo funny, as it the fact that the link is to your hub that supports Hubpages, and bashes the naysayers. Bottom line, no one's forcing them to write for hubpages and if it doesn't work for them, they should stop, go elsewhere with their words of wisdom... Nice to see that hubpages is on the level, and has rules and standards.

I'll be following advise here as to how to hub... thanks!

My only criticism of your hub here is a disregard for the differences between your and you're, and there and their, then and than...... prob just rushed?! (In anger, be accurate)

If my writing here 'promotes my hub" can editors block that part out please... I did not put the hublink, just the topic and not the exact title either! and I'm not signed up to even try to make money off it, yet.

best,

R

Hi Robinbird.. Thanks for your lengthy commentary, I think your motivations for writing your hub are quite perfect and you would be surprised to learn just how much someone really can earn here ..here are some examples ( http://hubsacademy.com/100aday) Its true I have disrespected my reader with a complete lack of proofreading and an inability to type proper grammar . I think its because I cant make a punctuation mark w/o looking - believe it or not ..Its a rare day I misspell or use improper grammar when writing with pen and paper - there is some disconnect in my mind when using a keyboard.

But, as a one off rant - Im ok with leaving any typos as I have nothing to gain or lose from the traffic that comes here, its not a for-profit article.

Hope to see more content from you, I like your style!

Robinbird_57 12 months ago

Thanks! No disrespect, I am just awful with typos or errors in email, comments, etc... like you say those are more one off rants!

I can write on different subjects -- so I will have to read about the rules and the methods first, to see if it will be a fit for me. It seems as long as you follow the rules, write to give information, and join up with the companies that pay -- you will do well. Not certain I can do 50 or 100 though!

Also, if you can't push your products or work that's elsewhere, even if it ties in with your hubpage, that's too bad. I can see you can't just write an advert to your stuff, or a hub and push non-related writing... but if it ties in?

Thanks again for the really quite positive rant, and great reply.
