Online Copywriting meets SEO Copywriting | Balance ?
.
Let me tell you about a serious mistake I made in my online journey. Long before I had any involvement with the opportunities of making money online, writing was an integral part of my life. Early on, by all academic standards my writing efforts were effective, later, as a journalist and columnist, I felt great pride at conversations and mail that my efforts inspired.
When I began my online journey I clumsily believed that my style and approach to writing would be the same and would prove effective in generating income.
I was wrong.
You see, whether I liked it or not, once I began to write online I stepped away from being a "writer" and was in fact a Marketer. If I had to make claims to a "writer" word, copywriter is the best I could claim.
But I was a terrible copywriter, I arrogantly assumed that I would need no training or study - its just writing!
Very recently, I began pouring over the works of the most esteemed marketing copywriters in the trade and I stepped through the looking glass - continue should you desire to step through also.
Principle of Automatic Marketing via Persuasive Copywriting
First, I began to learn what marketing was and how it related to my online endeavors
'If its not trackable, its not marketing, its public relations"
Your prospect is like a piece of string that you must pull gently up a
hill. Never push a string.
If you find something that works, keep doing it until it stops working.
If you try it and it doesn’t work, you’re doing it wrong.
Promote benefits - not Features - lifestyle, image and emotion sells
there are no boring subjects, just boring writers.
Technical specifications make for boring copy, so the complete
list should not be included in the letter, just the highlights. But a complete list should be included somewhere. (on the effectiveness of authoritative/technical language, even if its not within the understanding of your audience)
Rephrase the most prominent benefits in the closing
Sell one product, one service. And be as specific as possible. Specialists make more money than generalists. Neurosurgeons make more money than general practitioners. The more narrow your focus, the better defined you will be
complexity is the enemy of communication
BECAUSE (one of the most powerful words in persuasive copywriting)
empty hype words; "You know these words well—words like “amazing,” “incredible,
“awesome,” the “best ever,” “colossal,” and the “greatest." ...are transparent and are the best way to dissuade your leads and conversions
The easiest way to make money is to have no competitors.
It’s better to be a big fish in a small pond than a small, struggling fish in a big pond.
These are the principles, that pop out to me as great truths and should be integrated into my online pursuits. These excerpts come from the works of Ben Hart, a Direct Marketer who created millions in sales with nothing more than the printed word. Direct Mail had always seemed bogus to me, but it persists because it is quite effective. Buy the book below to make the first step in improving your online efforts.
Killer Web Copy - Copywriting for the Web
One of the key components to good copywriting is to make your copy speak
directly to your customer.
Your copy should be written so that an average person can easily read it and understand it.
Copywriting is all about the power of words. It is the words that make all the
difference, not the layout. One of the fundamentals of copywriting is to write with
black lettering on a white background. This keeps things simple.
there are eight main ways to write a headline
You need to make it conversational, focused and simple. Many times the starting
paragraph is a story. People relate well to stories. Stories have a way of drawing
people in and making them feel comfortable
Many times writers tend to be sticklers for grammar, but in the case of
copy, grammar is optional. Written and spoken English have almost two
sets of grammatical rules. Go with the rules for spoken English when
writing copy.
People respond to bullet points and they are often under utilized in copywriting.
People do not want to read through blocks of text to get to the main point so you have to give them the main points up front
Look for words that just seem to pull down the momentum of the text and
replace them with strong words

Six "Weapons of Influence"
Cialdini defines six "weapons of influence":
- Reciprocity - People tend to return a favor, thus the pervasiveness of free samples in marketing. In his conferences, he often uses the example of Ethiopia providing thousands of dollars in humanitarian aid to Mexico just after the 1985 earthquake, despite Ethiopia suffering from a crippling famine and civil war at the time. Ethiopia had been reciprocating for the diplomatic support Mexico provided when Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1935. The good cop/bad cop strategy is also based on this principle.
- Commitment and Consistency - If people commit, orally or in writing, to an idea or goal, they are more likely to honor that commitment. Even if the original incentive or motivation is removed after they have already agreed, they will continue to honor the agreement. For example, in car sales, suddenly raising the price at the last moment works because the buyer has already decided to buy. See cognitive dissonance.
- Social Proof - People will do things that they see other people are doing. For example, in one experiment, one or more confederates would look up into the sky; bystanders would then look up into the sky to see what they were seeing. At one point this experiment aborted, as so many people were looking up that they stopped traffic. See conformity, and the Asch conformity experiments.
- Authority - People will tend to obey authority figures, even if they are asked to perform objectionable acts. Cialdini cites incidents such as the Milgram experiments in the early 1960s and the My Lai massacre.
- Liking - People are easily persuaded by other people that they like. Cialdini cites the marketing of Tupperware in what might now be called viral marketing. People were more likely to buy if they liked the person selling it to them. Some of the many biases favoring more attractive people are discussed. See physical attractiveness stereotype.
- Scarcity - Perceived scarcity will generate demand. For example, saying offers are available for a "limited time only" encourages sales.

Awesome information on copywriting. I have to remember to pull not push and be more personable. That is hard for me as I am naturally stand-offish! I think I need to work more on me than the copywriting.
Oh heck, this is an awful lot of helpful information. I wonder whether I can master that because of my limited knowledge of English being my second language. I could desperately do with the money and where do I look for work?
Great info, SF. I use these principles every day when I'm writing for clients, but they often fall by the wayside when I write hubs.
Another thing that has helped me is to look beyond the target market. Rather than writing to an audience, I'll narrow it down to one person. I think about where they might live, how many kids they have, why they're shopping for this particular product or service; almost like creating a character for a story. Then I write to that person and that person only. Sometimes it helps to narrow your focus like that, and if you're writing to a specific person, the writing is usually conversational by default.
Sunforged, This is a very interesting article and a little different perspective for me. I think I still have so much to learn. I appreciate this helpful hub.
Very interesting. I have used some of the same principles of selling while working as a waitress! The bottom line is that people tip more if they like you, but there are sneakier (for lack of a better word) techniques in upselling and earning tips that are the same as much of your points in this article. Thanks for the hub.
Hey Sunforged, this hub about copywriting really struck a cord with me because I have actually resisted learning the skill and yet when I was working I was the one that always did promotional copy and instructional summaries. It was more productive and cost effective for my employer to have one who could write and teach learn the new skills. So, I guess I should have learned from the experience that I must be a good copywriter to sell anything, because that's how I sold myself as an employee. Where was my head at? Switching to on line writing I thought I had a different audience, but as Betcaro said above, earning tips, and even getting raises and promotions involves the same principles. Great hub on Copywriting. Time for me to learn the more effective techniques.
Nice work here I actually agree with becaro. these are the same steps you use for selling in person or on the phone. great article
I was just wondering if copywriting was something I should look into. I recognized right away, when I first started writing online a year ago, that my academic style wouldn't work. Anyone who compares my latest book (broad hint!) with even my earliest online writings will see a difference, but maybe not a big enough difference.
You say that writing online is not so much writing as marketing is beginning to hit home. Maybe if I'd known that a year ago, I wouldn't have been so eager to start. But now your comment simply confirms what I have begun to suspect and embrace. Thank you.
Thanks for this Sunforged. Even though it's fairly simple and easy to understand-- I think I need to re-read it . . . several times.

Thanks for the tips. I am always looking for info on this web writing business and spent way too much time just winging it!
Well now I can see what has happened to you! You have really taken a step back and evolved - you have changed your recent style in writing and it shows! It really is a great leap in your self development and I like your unique style in this particular article. The spacing really does give people room to breath, so to speak - it helps to digest every word. I have found myself immersed in your writing, rather than stray.
Josh - I really, really do like this new style! *wink* You are growing in every way - both as a father and now as a writer - no flannel - well done!
Quite exceptional
Just the thing for me to read. I agree with "social proof" and see it in action all the time on the internet. Sometimes people have many follower for no other reason than they have many followers.
Great share on copywriting, SF. I like the points about being "specific" and be "direct" -- giving the points up front. Maita
you have all the character traits of being a very effective teacher/instructor! you are so good at what you do, it seems a shame to have you behind a computer all day. I dont mean shame in bad, but you have such a connection with the pulse of people, I can see you teaching classes. great hub of writing and marketing strategies. great teaching is basically marketing and presenting your subject so the audience wants to know more. you do it well. :]
certainly some epic quotes. I like the specialist/generalist comparisons.
Persuasive copywriting quotes are great for effective web copy. Your hubs are always so informative. Thanks.
Thank you SF for this information. I intend to have a look at all my old hubs and see what I can do to improve my style as you have explained above.
Thanks for so much good information as is always with your hubs. I have a lot of reading to do on all this.
Glad I found this today -- I could relate to your transition from print media to online writing. This is a whole different world. I've spent a lot of time breaking habits from academic writing and other parts of my past. Writing for websites taught me to keep the language simple. Enjoyed the focused presentation, strong organization and powerful tips -- thanks!
Thanks for the great info in this hub I like the layout and book promotion You are so knowledgeable and write for easy reading. I have one technical hub that does well but agree about drawing in the reader with simple language and a good title Thanks for sharing
Thanks! I have chosen 2 of your points to start trying immediately.
I'm mulling this over to "see how I feel"...all good advice to improve traffic and income, I have no doubt.
Maybe the real goal is to incorporate these ideas in our articles without sacrificing creative ethics or quality.
Thanks for the great information. I will begin using some of your tips right away and add many of your suggested books to my ever growing reading list. Great hub!
A very interesting read. In the end I guess it comes down to one very important question, and that is what do you write for? Do you write for money or do you write for love? If you had more money, how much more time could you devote to writing for love? What would it take to get the money to have the time to write for love?
I write mostly because I enjoy it. Whether or not it makes me money isn't the all important thing for me. But certainly if I can do anything to improve the money flow, then it's worth it. If some of the ideas here could be put forth in just the right way, I'd be satisfied if the numbers increased only slightly, so thanks.
BTW, the one thing about copywriting that I always find interesting is that writers of articles, say in newspapers, don't write their own headlines. Copywriters do. Just like novelists do not write their own back cover blurbs. There's an art to both copywriting and writing, and sometimes both can't be done well.
Hi SF, Thanks for the tips and techniques. English is my 2nd language and my problem is more on writing style (to keep story engaging) and grammar. On your suggested books, if I can only read 1 book, which will be your recommended book?
This was a very practical article!I am bookmarking it for further study and putting your ideasx into practice. Voted up.
What a great hub! I must say, you have done it again! I really enjoyed reading your take on this. I learn every day, and it seems I never catch up. Everything changes so quickly and there is so much to learn to begin with. Thanks so much for all this information.
How informative! In the world of writing this is great to know! I am keeping this article in my pocket for quick reference. :)

Great tips, SF! Some of these are going on my reading list. I recently read (most of) Web Copy That Sells (the author's name escapes me at the moment) and I learned a lot from it. The hard part is going back and tweaking those first tries!
