How I Made Money Writing on HubPages - Year One
79couldnt help myself..cashed all my holiday commish checks
Thank You to the Hubpages Community
Wow, so two of my Hubpages milestones have just passed. One year of constant publishing and community interaction plus a total of 100 hubs published.
The little number next to my name to the right will reveal that I have been registered for 16 months up to the point of this hub being published, in fact, i have been attempting to find the time to write this commemorative hub for a month now. The 100 hub milestone seemed to be the spur I needed.
There is no way on earth I would have stayed motivated and focused on expanding one aspect of my presence as a writer and online marketer without the constant support and enjoyment I have gained here at HubPages. Writing online, web design, online marketing and basically just working from home can be really solitary activities, it can get boring , it can get tedious and it can seem sometimes like the effort isnt worth the return.
That isnt true here at Hubpages, between comments, emails and forums, writers can really help each other in everything form personal questions to promotion and I have really come to appreciate it.
Where else can I say I have increased my traffic and revenue 200% this month and get anything but a blank stare?
So Thank You everyone, I appreciate your involvement, suggestions and comments and all of it has really help me to focus on my goals, and have fun doing it!
HubPages and Pay Per Click marketing; One Year Down
As the title suggests, I hope to impart realistically what one can expect in income from a moderate involvement in the Hubpages publishing Platform.
Many of us come from very different backgrounds in regards to motivations and technical/online proficiency.
Less than 3 years ago I would have had no idea what an RSS feed is, I couldnt tell you how to insert anchor text and a computer virus would have made me buy a new computer (In fact, It did)..Now,I do in fact make a full time income using nothing but online sources. I actually hate computers, am still a terrible typer and would prefer to be out in the sun, than in front of a computer. Computer Geek is not an apt description.
What skills did I come to the online marketing/HubPages world with?
- 1998 - Built AOL Home Pages - using html which I copied or retyped string by string from HTML for dummies. Spent a few weeks doing it and forgot all about it, wasnt my computer, didnt have my own internet
- 2002 - Library research assistant - used library database search to assist students in research - learned search commands , boolean text etc.
- 2003- Graphic Artist - as a Graphic Artist for a small Print Shop, began to use Google Images for reference material - if it wasnt during work hours, I NEVER touched a computer.
- 2004 - helped build (funding and planning) a free wifi network for a Community development company - never actually used the wifi myself.
- 2006- got my first computer!
- 2007- Began to develop MySpace pages to reconnect with friends after a move and promote my art and the art and music of friends.
- 2007 - Became addicted to eBay and actually achieved PowerSeller status - became rather good at product searches and price comparisons.
The point? Im no more a computer whiz or savant than your average soccer mom or retired person. As technology as become more a part of everyones life I have been sucked in also, but I certainly dont have a head start. If I can make web sites and write articles for affiliate and freelance income, anybody can.
Internet Marketing: My Journey to Hubpages
In that short history, you will see no mention of affiliate marketing or writing. I was previously an editor and columnist for Community Newspaper and staff writer for a small Arts Magazine, writing was a passion but never considered a viable income opportunity. I did (and do) run a off-line Graphic Design and Guerrilla marketing company, where I try to make jobs for the creative individuals in the world who lack a business sense (rather common combo). After beginning to see the trends and norms in the small subset of the internet world that MySpace represented I decided to bring my business online.
While developing my pages and approach - Fine Arts meets Business marketing - I began to wonder about the fembots that often graced Myspace and why do these annoying pop ups exist?
I found Commission Junction and affiliate marketing was opened up to me. I incorporated my affiliate opportunities into my eBay customer base and saw small profits ...this was very exciting!
My affiliate focus was only on eBay related products and I started writing articles for a now unpublished site that shared the different tricks and experiences I had with dropshipping, paypal, ebay etc. One of the articles began to see thousands of viewers a week and I scrambled to figure out why and how I could continue the trend.
I read something about using Yahoo Answers to attract customers to my site, While answering a question I saw a competing answer..it was terrible, it was wrong and the link led to Hubpages..I read the article and thought , why would anyone bother trying to attract traffic to this crap?
I had casually scanned the 30DC course and had seen references to Hubpages and realized that I also had an account at hubpages. After some research I figured I would give it a try as it seemed like an easier way to make good looking pages. One plus I recognized, is that I wouldnt be pigeonholed to a topic like I was on my own blog.
I only published 5 articles in the two months leading up to 2009, but one of them about how to set up your firefox for internet marketing purposes was really popular, it got featured, i got tons of comments and fun conversation and hundreds of viewers a day. I figured this was how it was supposed to work!
Writing for Money: Is Hubpages the best venue?
As an aside, that article although receiving tons of hub traffic and social traffic from my myspace and even some trickle through from still very popular ebay blog, never made a cent..or at least nothing worth mentioning.
Which leads me to HubPages Insight #1
Social Traffic has no direct monetary value - not all traffic is equal!
If your asking questions about FaceBook and MySpace and Digg and emailing links to your friends, you are barking up the wrong tree. HubPages traffic is also social traffic, i enjoy this traffic! it personalized my experiences ...but dont ever make the association that all traffic is equal and for gods sake stop trying to come up with devious ways to link your hubs in the forums
Hubpages is the BEST venue overall for online writers:
I write for EVERY online platform that I know about. Only Hubpages enjoys the authority and almost immediate indexing that makes it so special. If you just are looking to be read and communicate with your writing than the hubpages social community is without compare. if you want to make money online from your writing than the closest you can find to "set and forget" is Hubpages. Between the quality control standards and the interlinking done by the site automatically you have a huge headstart in your placement and authority compared to self publishing or spam filled wastelands like Associated content.
All the information you need to optimize your pages, gain traffic, learn keyword research and develop your own websites is FREE to be found here at Hubpages. I personally recommend this platform to many people i work with as great place to train and learn in how to write for money online and be a successful affiliate marketer.
A chronology of success and failures
As part of my 2010 plan I graphed and plotted all my online efforts. I measured which topics, sites and campaigns were performing the best, which could improve and which were best forgotten.
Across all my campaigns, my Hubpages efforts show the most improvement and the best return of investment. Theoretically, although I lose 40% of my income opportunities on the Big 3 affiliate programs that connected directly with HubPages, if I focused only on Hubpages I would see the fastest return in my investment. Keeping that in mind I have doubled my publishing here, by the end of March 2010, I will have published more hubs than I did in all of 2009.
Hubpages Insight #2
Identify what works for you and try to repeat the formula
If you see that a certain topic or keyword is much more successful than others. Jump on it! Write related hubs, create complementary blogs that backlink to the topic, write similar topics at other platforms. Dont miss a proven formula.
Does Hubpages make Money! Yes, Yes, yes......
As I tried to make clear above, Hubpages and directly related content for me is the easiest most dependable earner in my rather large portfolio of tried methods. I have a large social profile presence, super-twitter accounts, automated web sites and a liitle more than 50 domains at various stages of completion. HubPages comes out strong as the most bang for the time buck.
Im at a stage where direct income revealing is unwise. Plus many of my check writers dont allow it. But there is another reason they are not posted.
HubPages Insight #3
Learn to view your efforts in percentages and Analytics is your BEST friend
Use the graphical interfaces of your various networks to view your increases. Did your month to month traffic double? Yet your earnings remained the same. Why? Do certain topics show a higher conversion rate...write more of them. Percentages help at the beginning. If you are making .50 cents a day...that can be discouraging, another .50 cents a day isnt that encouraging...but thats actually a statistically huge jump! Anytime you can double your earning and or traffic, you have done something right!
So my years trends are laid out below: There are three very important changes you should make note of.
Between June and July, traffic doubled, by August it tripled. Yet, I wrote 0 hubs in June! and only 5 total between July and August?
November 09, shows a huge spike in all regards.
January 2010 sucked, yet was the second most active publishing period of the entire 16 months?

Weekly adsense revenue -Hubpages Channel
Monthly Impressions
Weekly Impressions line chart
Explanation:
So why the huge jump in traffic in the July 09 period? I went through every single hub and I changed the titles to keyword focused, search engine targetted results.
My previous titles and even unfortunately the URL's were gambles, I still had the mindset I had gained from print journalism and even still repeated in online make money circles that a catchy title was very important...well i dont agree.
If you looked closely, you would also see that although earnings increased in those months they didnt increase exponentially with the traffic increase..earnings increase didnt occur until November, this was partly due to the shopping crowd rush - you will see a giant spike during Black friday week...but that wasnt it. During November I learned how to manipulate the adsense triggering here at hubpages via header titles. The keywords that bring your traffic do NOT have to be the same as those that trigger ads. I doubled my average per click revenue via this tweak.
Hubpages Insight #4
Revitalize old content - The Keyword tool is your income diviner
Rework old and under performing articles, use analytics to see what keywords are working for you and use the adwords keyword tool to tweak your hubs. You can simply run your publsihed URL through the tool to see the likely candidates.
This period July-November , was the first time I considered Adsense as a worthwhile revenue opportunity, previously I considered it a safeguard. As an affiliate marketer, I am and was accustomed to a $3 - $100 commission on my sales and leads. But, I was very pigeonholed into what I could write about. With adsense, I can ALMOST write about whatever i please and enjoy some level of profit. There is a way to truly optimize for adsense but clicks happen with any topic.
So why did traffic and earnings tank in January although it was a very productive publishing month?
There is a post holiday drop in online shopping, BUT Im not much of a product marketer. The drop can be associated with online traffic worldwide dropping, but, why arent my earnings and traffic bouncing up with all the new hubs published?
Easy, with all the small details of the google dance aside, it takes at least a month to see where your content is going to end up in the search engines. Plus since I spent more time writing, much less effort was put into promotions. The traffic and earnings spike Im seeing this March is directly related to my January activity.
HubPages insight #5
Live a month behind
Dont let your expectations discourage you. Nothing happens overnight. Anything that does has no meaning in your long term results. Remember, if your writing at hubpages and other places that allow for long term passive income generation, your in this for the long run.

Hubpages insight #7
- Traffic is more about targetting than about levels, sure with every 1000 views you can expect 10-20 conversions. But the difference between how many convert to how many dont can have significant effects on your earnings, specifically in regards to adsense and ebay - as with both of them the value of your clicks will drop if send untargetted junk traffic to their programs. I would (and do) exchange broad traffic that doesnt convert for laser targetted traffic that does, i rather have 10 buyers than 10,000 tirekickers. If your getting a huge influx of traffic that isnt doing anything for you, figure out how to make them go away or how to convert or divert that traffic to a better location.

I mentioned know your sources as my final pretentious insight. Its really common here at Hubpages and across the online world, for people to attempt to make money by selling the system of how to make money. Here at hubpages you will see a new user in the community post their first 5 hubs on income generation and wealth and the next month they will be in the forums asking why they arent making money! Or, in the less devious but equally disturbing trend, you see users who have been online 3 months, who have spent all their days asking for assistance, suddenly break out the make money from hubpages hub...that is usually just a poorly diluted version of the help they have received over the months.
99% of make money articles are the same info diluted a thousand times or are complete misinformation and tripe. This is 99% true.
Occasionally after a method has proven to work well for me, I will share...if you cared to check the progression and the publish dates with the bio and stats i have provided you will see that these small methods have worked in some way for me...and they never end with a "Buy this" link..lol

Although I said I wouldnt end with a buy this now, I will.
Throughout these hundred hubs there are a couple of products I believe in and I have stayed true to promoting only things I believe in. Sure the ebay and amazon feeds are keyword related, but if I took the time to type even a word about it than I believe in it.

Thanks for this hub, sunforged!
I've been following your hubs and reading you on the forums from the beginning of my hubbing (two whole months ago!) and you're a consistent source of great and helpful information.
I'm just starting to see trickles of Adsense money and still struggling to motivate myself to keep on hubbing, and it's hubbers like you and hubs like this one that keep me going!
Thanks so much :D
I always find these kind of "personal journey" hubs interesting and this is probably the best one I've read. One thing that I need to learn about is optimising adsense revenue because at the moment there seems no rhyme or reason to it, even after looking for high paying keyphrases. From looking at my analytics there is just such a wide variation, from 1p - over £10 on the same page. You mentioned optimising for adsense revenue here, can you expand on that? Good job!
I really must start writing commercially and applying your techniques, because I love writing here on the hub, and I'm getting read by who I want to be read by, my stats are looking better daily, but writing on Christianity does not earn money! and I reckon I need an alter ego 'other profile' to write stuff under that will attract those clicks and dollars!
Your hub shows clearly what can be done, I thank you!
Stay Blessed,
John
For those of us in our infancy of learning about keyword research, SEO, AdSense etc... What is a good range to target in AdWords? A keyword or phrase that gets what range of views per month? Do you take a few and compare to how many Google returns for that search?
Some great advice on here, although may I point out that I came to your hub via one of those pesky deviously inserted forum links, and clicked on an adsense add which I found interesting :P
Great tips sunforged! I don't know about you but my January, my February and (so far) my March earnings are waaaaayyyyyyy down last year's earnings. Was hoping I can get another pay out by middle of this year but from the looks of things, that's not going to happen. Oh well, I need to buckle down and learn more but my tax busy season is getting in my way :(. I'm not willing to call it quits yet but I have to sit down and really do some serious reading and when I do, your hub will be at the top of my reading list. Thanks!
Wow, what a great hub! Thanks so much for your advice and expertise and for showing we can all learn and apply ourselves if we make up our minds to do so. Needless to say I will be bookmarking yet another one of your hubs.
I once used Commission Junction also. I'm glad Google Adsense put most of the affiliates out of business.
Congrats on the 100, Sunforged
The thing that I like most about Hubpages is that the top Hubbers are so willing to give advice for free. That is something that is fairly unique (I am sure that you are all too aware of some of the bitchiness on writing sites).
I also like that way that it is a broad church, from marketing orientated writers to creative writers, and everything in between.
I have a sneaking feeling that your 200th Hub will be arriving in far less than 16 months :D
Best of luck - onwards and upwards :)
You are a gem sunforged. Thanks! Your layout as well as your content is superb! Thanks also for including Ryan's wonderful video. I'm off to make some major title and heading changes! And congrats on reaching 100!
Ok, cool - that's good info, thanks :)
Not intersted in making money online, but still find your subject very intersting. Well done :-)
Analyzing trends in your hubs is fun, even though it seems they never have rhyme or reason. Thanks for sharing your journey Sunforged, and your tips ;)
Sunforge, why not link up hubs in the forums if they are relevant?
The time invested here is far better than time invested anywhere - Hubpages do indeed have everything we need to be our best for traffic etc - I am glad that I am thinking along the right lines here!
This hub is certainly the best one I have read so far on this subject. I want to thank you for publishing - I feel a bit more confident now.
Sunforge - thanks x
p.s. What a wonderful achievement - 100 hubs! Celebrate my friend!
Great information here. Thanks so much for sharing it! Thank you for your honesty and the willingness to share what works for you. A big THANK YOU! :)
Thanks for this information, sunforged. It is indeed a great inspiration. I very much like the way you wrote about your past and how things led to what you are today.
Sunforged - It was a priviledge to wade through this! I have bookmarked this - will share in the forums and newbies in the future who might contact me. I like to direct people to Guru's like you!
This information is priceless! Thank you!
A fantastic, info packed hub SF. You look to have put a lot of thought and effort into this one and looking at the reaction/comments - another top 'hubber helping others' hub. I like the fact that you've been open about your background and use yourself as proof that you don't need to be a web wizard in order to become successful online.
Absolutely fabulous, well done and huge congrats on this being your 100th hub :)
Nice information. Thank you for giving advice and tips. I agree with you and I think you had proof that. Good work.
I believe that hubpages is the best place for me to share my passion in writing. And I get money also.
A very well written easy to follow hub, with some really terrific techniques and advice. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. The video was helpful as well.
Sage
thank you! learned more. now, back to the drawing board...
This is really interesting, thank you sunforged, I'm not sure about anything that I'm doing on this, recently became a hubnugget but don't know whether I'm doing this to get income or not. I need it, but unsure as to how to go about it. This is great information and I will digest. Thank you, and congratulations.
Thanks for sharing your tips for making money here at Hubpages. I've added this hub to the Admin Picks at my new Best of Hubs directory.
Great hub, thank you, congratulations and more power to your elbow!
As always, a greatly informative hub! Congrats on your 100 (now 107) hubs!
I'm a bit confused by one of your statements: "During November I learned how to manipulate the adsense triggering here at hubpages via header titles. The keywords that bring your traffic do NOT have to be the same as those that trigger ads. I doubled my average per click revenue via this tweak."
By header titles, do mean capsule titles or hub titles, or both. What do you mean the keywords that bring you traffic don't have to be the same as those that trigger ads, and how would you tweak that?
I know Analytics provides a wealth of helpful information, but I never look at it becase every time I do, I just get thoroughly confused. I'd love it if you would do a hub explaining Analytics and when exactly to do with it ... hint, hint...
Thank you Sunforged for a well written article packed with good information. I certainly learned alot and have bookmarked this hub.
Thumbs up and have a great day!
Great - I can't wait to see it! I am a little bit knowledgeable with the TKA keyword "rules" because I did join and took advantage as much as I could for the first month (talk about information overload!), but I had to cancel because I'm just nowhere near enough earnings to justify the expense after month $1. Looking very much forward to your video - thanks!
I know I haven't put enough effort into HP, and part of that may be due to the lack of traffic I've seen. This hub has poignantly pointed out some of the other mistakes I've made here, so I'll be back at the drawing board asap, with fresh hope.
The video is priceless, by the way. Thanks!
Great artical--Wish you the very best. I will re-visit your HubPage again.
Question for you if you don't mind: How do I get AMAZON ads on my HubPages ?? I am very new at this and need all the help I can get.
Thank You

Congrats on passing your 100th hub milestone and the rewards! Great info! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for another logical, informative hub. I really appreciated reading about your background. It gives me hope! Bookmarked for further reading , mulling, and re-reading ;) ...and sincere congrats on the milestones!
The content, as it is of self-experience, is of great help to others. But, in my experience, i get little income fron ebay
did you do anything else in addition to just writing on hubpages - as in bookmarking your pages, interlinking your pages, linking related pages together, linking to hub pages from other sites you write on etc?
Great hub. I'm real new and trying to learn. I have 3 hubs so far and as much as I love to rant about everything my hubs are more geared toward the visual. Photos and art. What are your thoughts about that? Is it better writing about things you know or is combining text and photos a good idea? Thanks from an old dude trying to learn!!
I think this is fascinating. I've just created my first hub and have been introduced to a whole new world.
Congratulations on your success, I look forward to learning more from you.
This is a great Hub, thanks for taking the time to do it. We agree wholeheartedly on The Keyword Academy; their methodology and building block approach has been critical for us. Much continued success to you!
Great great article, thank you very much! I think its time I signed up to the keyword academy!
There are lots of knowledge to be learned from this hub. Thanks for imparting some of these knowledge.
PERFECT!
I do not expect to earn a living through HubPages but will give it a try as per this hub.
You will the first writer that I will start following. Thank you for writing
Oh! What a great hub! It was this write up that inspired me. Now i'm taking the 30 hubs challenge.
Thanks
Brilliant Hub. Very informative and encouraging. Thanks for sharing this information
Fantastic hub, sunforged, and congrats on passing the 100 hub milestone! I've barely been on HubPages lately as I've been managing my other affiliate efforts and creating more online real estate. Your tracking is very nice, and shows the results that can be had with a little effort. Since doubling my # of hubs during my Hub Challenge a couple of months ago, I have seen a significant traffic and earnings increase as well as reaching that first Google payout (already got the check!). If one puts in the effort, they can certainly make some money doing this...there is no shortcut. As with anything hard work is the factor and recipe for success. Congrats to you, and may you continue to increase your earnings!
Wow you sure do attract a lot of readers, were I so lucky?
I've read this all the way through, but too much to take in in one go. But it is great for reference with tons of invaluable information, so I've bookmarked it.
Thanks for sharing!
very useful info. I hope to be where you are someday. Thanks.
I love your opening picture on this hub. It makes a statement. Inspiring hub, thanks.
Awesome hub... happy you have accomplished so much! It's good to hear that it's possible. I am still having trouble myself trying to figure out how to really optimize the affiliate and adsense. I don't quite understand how to work it out. I can't get the cool links with the images like I thought I would from google affiliate network. It's always a plain text link. I don't know if that is all you can do because of HubPages rules/what. Thank you, though. :-P
I have been searching for the information you posted here for many long nights. I cannot thank you enough. Thank you, Thank you.....
what a great hub, packed full of useful information. thankyou
This is a very good hub and worth reading
This article is a big help. Thanks for sharing your insight. I look forward to reading the other articles you have written.
This is one fantastic article. Thanks for the encouragement.
Excellent hub, you have done so much research to work all of this out. Hence, I can trust your judgement with the outcomes. There is a lot here to absorb, so I'm bookmarking so I can return for slower reading. Thanks.
I love that - hard easy work!
Thanks, Sunforged. I'm getting better at getting placed on the search list, but need to work on my adsense some more, I think. Your hub has pointed that out all too well.
Thanks for sharing this hub with me again. I still love the information on this hub, and will share with my followers too. :)
3000 words SF! I read every one of them and it didn't seem that long which is a testament to this hub and "your story". As always it's jam packed full of tips and ideas. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for that hub, Sunforged, very informative!
this is really fantastic with very detail explanation. i found it very useful. thanks you
thanks for the insights!
Very interesting and I understand it all a bit more - I would say I am 3/4 there - I get the general idea but can't seem to keep repeating it! For every good hub there will be 5-10 bad ones which make a penny a month!
Cool, looking forward to reading that and 300 good hubs, that's impressive!
This is one of the most useful hubs I have read. Thank you for the tips.
I had no idea social bookmarking sites don't make you money. I could have wasted time with that. However, like you said, don't believe everything you read... I will start testing this with a couple of hubs.
You also had a good idea as to see what key words are working. I guess when I get more hubs written, I will go through, and tweak my hubs a bit, kind of like you did.
Thank you.

Excellent hub, and informative. Congratulations on your achievement. What I love about following you is your contribution to the community and also knowing that just like the rest of us, you are a regular guy, and hard work and effort can pay off for all of us.
Your insights here are quite valuable, and I agree the most with the "repeat what works for you" because I think for each of us because of interests and talent, that may be something slightly different.
