Optimizing your Layout and content for Sales online

If your struggling to reach success as an Amazon associate, your not alone.

Amazon is the internets number one online retailer..and they know it. When your trying to make money with the amazon associate program you have a very small window of time to turn your visitor into a paying sale.

The cookie length for an amazon conversion is an almost unheard of - one-session cookie. Once your traffic leaves your site via an amazon link you better hope they already have their credit card in hand. In order to receive credit for a sale the item must be placed into the customers shopping cart within that session.

Full relevant details from the Amazon Associate agreement:

a “Qualifying Purchase” occurs when (a) a customer clicks through a Special Link on your site to the Amazon Site; (b) during a single Session that customer either (i) adds a Product to his or her shopping cart and places the order for that Product no later than 89 days following the customer’s initial click-through, (ii) purchases a Product via our 1-Click feature, or (iii) streams or downloads a Product from the Amazon Site if the Product is a Digital Product; and (c) the Product is shipped to or streamed or downloaded by, and paid for by, the customer.

A “Session” begins when a customer clicks through a Special Link on your site to the Amazon Site and ends upon the first to occur of the following: (x) 24 hours elapses from the customer’s initial click-through; (y) the customer places an order for a Product that is not a Digital Product; or (z) the customer follows a link to the Amazon Site that is formatted with an Associate’s tag that is not assigned to you.

Keep your visitors in YOUR pages - Maximize conversion

If you have managed to attract traffic that has commercial intent - often done via product reviews, product comparisons or problem-solving orientated article - you also want to be sure that the customer is getting YOUR cookie placed in their browser.

Amazon does provide a rather expansive set of associate tools. When using your own sites you can incorporate many html and java based links, many of them highly customizable based on your visitors previous amazon activity.

If using a blogger blog one has built in amazon modules, if using a Wordpress blog one can find or purchase Amazon plug-ins.

If your submitting your content to a site that doesnt allow html but does allow external links one can create outbound links to specific products and hope that the customer either purchases your suggested item or finds a suitable related product, one can maximize this opportunity by taking advantage of the Amazon Associate A Store option.

Rather than build blog posts, web sites or module stuffed hubpages one can send interested parties to your own specific stores with hand selected items. These stores called "A-Stores" can be very powerful tools.

One benefit of using an A-store: Many of the script based tools will slow down load time - by simply linking out via a simple text or image link that ends at your A-store you can keep your pages loading fast.

On sites that work on an impression share program one is free to gain the 100% chance of a conversion if the cookie is placed via an A-store link.

Setting Up Your A Store

Steps to setting up an A-Store:

Log into your Amazon Associates Account:

(If your an online affiliate, you may find this affiliate dashboard useful HubPages Affiliate Dashboard Tool

  1. Go to the aStore Link: https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/gp/associates/network/store/manage-your-stores.html
  2. Select add an aStore
  3. At this point create a new tracking id- this will be the name of your store and a trackable id for your sales - You can have up to 100 unique ids.
  4. Follow the prompts to create category pages and hand select items to include in your store - at the end of your selection you will be given various link style options

Some suggestions for A-Stores:

  • Create very specific topic based stores,
  • Find varied prices for the same item
  • Include related items (i.e. Cameras - Camera cases - rechargeable batteries)
  • Dont get caught up on the design
  • INCLUDE A SHOPPING CART
  • Point out the multiple item requirements for Free Super Saving Shipping

I have one of these sunforged, but I have it on-site. I can't make my mind up about them - they seem to get a fair bit of bad press. Plus Amazon have narrowed the net too far. Unfairly in my opinion. I remain on the fence about a-stores. I have sold the odd thing from mine but I haven't over-marketed it either. I'll rethink it, soon as I find the time.

And a very belated happy birthday. I think I have my eyes closed too much of late. Hope your day was great and you received something cool and funky :)

Did HP bother sending you a cup yet? If they won't, I'll send you one. A one in a million, no other like it ;)

to be clear, the suggestion is to make an astore for all your groups and provide the option for your pre-qualified visitors in conjunction with your traditional methods

Hello, hello, 21 months ago

I am also disdusted they way they dread people. I battle with them ever since I started to get the a correct password. I think they do it on purpose. I also read that after a few month they take you name off and when somebody purchase something it won't go to you. Ebay is the same only different methods. I think I wont display anything anymore. Why encourage dirty dealings?

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 21 months ago

Im not sure how to respond, Ive been a successful amazon affiliate for a few years now... Essentially, its a very easy sell, so they dont need to offer long term cookies in order to keep affiliates happy plus its pretty likely you would be overwritten by another amazon affiliate if the cookie was longer anyway.

I think what you read what the griping of failures - neither of the networks you refer to our "dirty dealers" they just happen to have a level of success which allows them to be be discerning on who and how they partner.

They can rightfully have the attitude that "they would have bought from us anyway"

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 21 months ago

I should add, whenever possible I offer alternative affiliates through my other networks that offer me greater commission and cookie life - but the trust that amazon and ebay have usually leads to higher conversion levels - hence I break even or make more via their networks' offers than those that offer me more to promote them

I confess to being confused. Are you saying it's better to use a text link to your Astore on HubPages, than to use the Amazon capsule?

Susana S profile image

Rated up SF :) I've taken your advice and created a niche Amazon A store to link to through some of my hubs. Time will tell if it's an effective way to increase sales - I sure hope so!

Really good explanation, SF - it is not something that I am looking to do at the moment (the economic situation means that I have to make money very quickly), but I may return to this in a couple of months.

Thumbs up and bookmarked :)

Good explanation! I didnt know that was the situation with Amazons cookies, it dosent seem very fair. I have two Astores, one has done okay and the other has done nothing.

Hi SF... I havent had a sale in months - not since the explosive cookie had timed out. I have had plenty of clicks but not resulting in sales. Bookmarking this SF... a great reference point to looking into the future for changes.:)

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 21 months ago

@Marisa, No - just pointing out that you have the ability to link via text links to easily created stores.

The ease and visibility/impact of the amazon modules is hard to beat and the astore can be used in conjunction with whatever monetization method you are currently using.

One can make an astore in 5 minutes, it doesn't take a very big time commitment

There is a benefit of A Stores for Amazon on Hubpages. I have not had time to finish doing it myself yet and still need to test to see if it really works, but for those who use specific products I think it will be beneficial. Create an A store which is free and load it up with all the specific products you use in your hubs. Then every now and again visit Amazon and check product availability of the products on your A Store. I'm assuming if it works right and says a product is sold out or unavailable, you now know to go to your hub and change the product.

I think its the only shot of trying to keep track of which products are still active without visiting all of one's hubs.

using an aStore as a organizational tool is a great concept! Good thinking.

I'm a little confused too, not by your explaination but by the fact that I'm not very in tune to all these savvy marketing techniques. Is there a future for the likes of me who are not very technically savvy but enjoy writing articles? Thanks.

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 21 months ago

@anglnwu,

There certainly will always be a place for those who write out of enjoyment and are passionate about their trade. Read SufiDreamers hubs about the content writing and freelance world, also look through my writing for money" hubs..

If you have an amazon associate account and you just click that astore link - I would be very surprised if it became far less confusing.

But it cant hurt to stay up to date with all your options, can it?

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave a true comment, best of luck!

5 minutes! That sounds promising - we'll give that one a try. Got to decide whether to go for the Greek foods, beds, or heavy machinery.

Maybe all three :D

Just about to try signing up for eBay, too, now that I have my own site :)

Hello sunforged. Timely topic. Got about 50 astores with keyword-optimized URLs, and just beginning to link them to my hubpages. How about pinging their URL? Have tried them on a couple, will see what happens.

I have never used the a store from Amazon Sunforged, I only depend on the affiliate products displayed on my hubs and perhaps this described why am doing badly with Amazon affiliate program

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 21 months ago

@oderog, the Astore is a great additional tools to add to your current sites and hubs, but a quick glance at your product related hubs makes me think you need to experiment more with "How' you layout your Product hubs and perhaps look at the layouts by Hub authors who have been forward about their Hp/Amazon success.

Excellent information Sunforged and right on the money on how powerful a tool an A-Store can be. If you or your readers want more info on how to seamlessly integrate an A-store into a Wordpress theme, I have written a tutorial here that has helped me and hundreds of others: http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Add-an-Amazon-aStor

Thanks, sunforged! I'm a newbie, so the info you provided was very helpful. I set up my aStore, but the problem I ran into was that I couldn't embed the link as a frameset or inline frame. Any suggestions? Or is that just the way it is? Thanks so much!

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 18 months ago

That is just the way it is , ddiamond, that particular feature will only work on your own sites - but as suggested, you can still link out to your store.

Excellent advice for a newbie. I am going to go back to my most read hubs and work on making a store. Then to add them to my new ones. You always give advice that is easy to read and understand. After this I have to explore SEO and backlinking. I am having difficulty fully understanding how not the why. Thanks again. Dee

Thank you for the Hub! I'm new to HubPages, but have focused on promoting product to try and capture Amazon sales. I've read that their aStores tend to have lower conversion rates. Have you found this to be the case in your experience since writing this Hub? Thank you again for all of the great information!
