Optimizing Adsense

Treating your online writing career as a business

Search the forums at any major online publishing , internet marketing or online content creation hub site and you will find one major unifying theme in the "Help" sections.

Why aren't I rich yet? Why am I not making any money? Does this thing work? Is this set up right ? Im not seeing any earnings yet, is adsense a scam, where can I make money online? I get lots of traffic, why aren't I getting any clicks ?

These questions point out two common issues with both new and experienced writers who attempt to make money online through their writing.

  1. I can make money overnight
  2. I make money because Im a good writer

See all 2 photos

You should have arrived here because you are familiar with the adsense revenue model and your performance is unsatisfactory, If this isnt the case,....get out of here, scoot, skadaddle, you are not wanted, you are not my target audience (<---- Important)..there are more general resources for writers farther down the page.

Lets take this opportunity to stop being "writers"...for the purpose of this composition we will think of writers, authors and poets as those creative individuals who must create because they must and compensation is not a required part of the deal.

In the past, you could have been a "Van Gogh" or a "da Vinci'...one died penniless the other was a jack of all trades who traveled the world and advised the King. Which do you want to be?

90% of the art you love was directly commissioned, atheists sculpted religious figures for Popes,Why?...because that was their market, they plied their trade in media they enjoyed but had to bend to the desires of the moneyholder. PERIOD

Writers Market

2010 Writer's Market
Amazon Price: $2.83
List Price: $29.99

So for the purposes of this tutorial, if your trying to make money writing for adsense, you are now a "da Vinci" and a "content creator"...throw your writer hang-ups away. If you can compose a sentence your writer enough for this industry. For the rest of the primadonnas...take a hike (or send me your portfolio ;) ) ..no really, you need to get your portfolio together and pick up a Writers Market, whatever you do get off my page.

So lets be clear, dont have misconceptions. Your adsense earnings have no relationship to your traditional writing skills or wittiness or research abilities. None.

Your earnings are not overnight, they build up exponentially over time if you do everything right.

So keeping in mind the concept of CONTENT CREATION writing online for profit as a business.

  1. Identify your expertise or interest
  2. Identify the high paying, well searched terms within those fields
  3. Identify your competition
  4. Identify the questions and needs of your visitors
  5. Maximize profits by optimizing your layout and approach in regards to your selected monetization method and visitor requirement

I am not going to explain each detail of those steps and neither should you once you identify those 5 requirements for yourself.

But, we can discuss it a little bit.

Identify your interest or experience

Believe it or not, there are high paying advertsing options in almost any field and its a lot easier to churn out content..yes, churn...lots of it, if you can find topics you already know well or enjoy learning about.

Identify the high paying / well searched keywords within those topics

Its really easy, head over to the adwords keyword tool and start typing ideas in, or even run URLs through it of pages that are relavant to your topics, there are tons of formulas out there for which keywords are worth targetting- check out the keyword academy link below for one method, the 30 day challenge has a similar keyword targetting method...find it!

Identify your competition

If your not on the first page, you dont exist. See if you can make it there. Once again, I suggest TKA or 30DC to teach you what is conquerable competition.

Identify the needs of your traffic

lets pretend you decided to pursue a niche in Herpes treatment...writing a general "Herpes Treatment" article isnt as urgent as an article on "Get rid of herpes sore now" .. Im exaggerating but try to wrap your head around the words that your visitor is tying to get to you and how they may perform...you want questioners and you want them to have a sense of urgency. At the bottom of this article are some books on search methodology and search psychology, read just one book in this field and you wont regret it.

Optimize to your monetization method

Were talking adsense here, its all about targetted traffic and optimized layouts and ads. You want the ads to be relevant to your searchers queries and you want them above the fold, in their faces. Adsense is targetted by keywords, make sure they are in your headers and content so the right ads appear

Keywords, Adsense optimization and layout

Really, Why arent you making money...as long as you write to your audience, standing in their shoes and yelling "buy or get out" with an empathasis on "get out" you should get clicks.

The evil truth is you really should be leaving your reader hanging a little, give them enough so they know they arrived at the right place, but keep enough unanswered so your links look tasty.

Getting the right ads to appear isnt hard, forget about stuffing and density, if you dont know what that means, dont worry it wasnt worth knowing, its just another distraction. Write naturally but be sure to use your keywords a few times in the text, absolutely use the keywords in your URL and in your titles, Using the keywords in your image file names and captions is a smart option also.

Layout..remember "above the fold" ...if your goal is income not readership, make sure those income opportunities are showcased, for here at hubpages I feel the way this hub is arranged provides the ultimate layout above the fold. If your a hubber you should be able to see what I did differently.

Im done with you now, get out!..ok, I kid...a little posiitvity is required, stay upbeat, dont spend to much time learning, get in the habit of a high output, you never know what works until you try everything that doesnt work! Throw lots of content out there, when a topic works, write more about it! IF you find a hungry market...feed it....be a 'Da Vinci" put on your SEO hat an dmake sure your articles are ranked nice and high...spend time making sure you are visible...its equally as important as writing it was. 99% of the crap you see about how to make money online easy is crap and lies. There is no easy...create, create, create, test, experiment, create some more, promote and create again ! Its a business and start-up costs at least in our time are required, dont buy anything you dont understand the purpose of and in general dont believe the hype.

Best of luck ..now leave

sunforged I'm SOOOOOOO glad you joined this HubMob. You are so knowledgable and, unlike some of our other hubber experts, have much more patience for new hubbers. Before I joined 6 months ago I read tons of Lissie and Mark Knowles. Both were way over my head. There are expert hubbers who seem to prefer the questions of intermediate level hubbers and above. Thank you for your committment to us new hubbers.

Fascinating... The more you told me to leave- the more I was compelled to stay. You finally confirmed something I have begun to suspect--but couldn't articulate as well as you did here-- a la the Van Gogh vs. da Vinci thing. My (predictably unsuccessful) method so far has been to ride the white-line. No committment in either direction, so it is not surprising I'm getting uncommitted results. It is not possible to be both men. Bookmarked and Thumbs up.

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 2 years ago

Thanks everybody! It sounds like some get my point! ...just as Linda said, you cant ride the white line, you have to pick an approach and see it to the end, I stand by the approach I reccomend and the two services I suggested, one which is free and the other which is $1/month for learning the essentials of targetting and promoting BUT certainly there are many ways and approaches that can lead to success...the point is pick one that can be tested and measured...see it through to the end..and devote time to Action..not reading "How"

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 2 years ago

Two other points, although I was blatant with my "get out" phrasing you have to learn to do this in far more subtle way when your writing for money in this particular model. and it probably seems a bit hypocritical to say dont read "how' articles on a how article and an article where I reccomend two training courses...of course some time must be spent getting your tools and approaches together but once you have that under your belt patiently put it into action for at least 3 months before making a decision into whether you should add more tools to your arsenal (ie "more hows")

Thats some great info, and I agree, and you know, despite the fact that only 1-2% of the internet.. probably more like 0.5 actually know and understand SEO (I'm an SEO expert btw)

It surprises me to see how many people come onto the internet and expect to make money right away living in denial of Marketing. Even though I sell my "services" for people, I'm more than willing to give all my information away for free, why, because it makes me more money!!! I appreciate bloggers like you, who tell people these valuable things (it costs you nothing, you make money, and people learn, everyone wins) The way I see it, the more money people make, the more money people can spend. check out this site im working on for a client btw http://www.skyhighresumes.com Vancouver Resume Writing Services. You make a good case. Writing content for the Web is certainly different than writing a novel, short story, you name it. It's different from reporting, journalism, etc. Especially when the purpose is to simply make money from adsense. At the same time, the Web is already cluttered with endless amounts of content. I think there should be some balance of "desire to make money with adsense" and an "ability to actually share something worthwhile." Just my opinion, though.

Thanks for writing about this.

You do have a lot to offer Sunforged. Thanks again for more practical information, and for dispelling mythes. You didn't address it here, but from what I recall, you are not a big proponent of backlinking right? Do you backlink at all? Are you sick to death of reading about it? Haha, is it, as you say, all crap and lies? There is a lot of that out there.

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 2 years ago

Ben..no, I am 100% a proponent of backlinking, there is nothing more important than backlinks..each backlink is a vote, every vote counts.

There is absolutely nothing one should spend time on more than developing a strong backlink camapign..its more important than even the content you create..as without backlnks you are not likely to ever have that content see the light of day

Well, hearing it from you it's like a bell ringing for me. I have spent today resizing art images, realizing my computer is memory deficient like a dinosaur. Thanks for underscoring backlinking's importance. I've maybe backlinked half of my hubs at index sites like Reddit.com and shetoldme.com but I don't think I've backlinked any of them more than at four other spots. Is there a threshhold # of backlinks that is better in your opinion. Somewhere I think I saw 5 being a good number, which would probably put me under on all my hubs, in regards to backlinking. On average, my 72 articles combined, get just under 100 impressions/day. I've read of people on here averaging 1000/impressions/day who have been on here less time. Anyway, sorry about the long response, I just know you know what the hell I'm talking about! Ha.

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 2 years ago

keeping in mind the purpose of this article..its not the amount of traffic. its how targetted and purposeful that traffic is, I rather have 20 visitors a day to this article who are searching for "why dont I make money from adsense" than 100 that are searching for "adsense". Many people write articles about pop topics like "superbowl commercials" they might see a couple of hundred visitors in the week following the event and than it will completely die, or the bollywood photo hubs that see tons of traffic but its traffic that isnt looking to buy or learn, and the related advertsiers are paying pennies! so I wouldnt sweat the exact numbers of traffic, its more important to see how your traffic performs. I have personally created 3 or 4 backlinks to your articles because of their quality..I wrote small writeups and included links from one of my blogs..this will probably continue to happen to your work over time. Unfortunately, reddit and similar ilk isnt a very "quality" backlink..perhaps look up "comment" backlinking methods as it will be more valuable to you in the long run..also your articles are quite young give them all some time to age, ...plus you will probably develop a better knack for titling for search traffic over time if you keep an open mind.

TKA isnt a bad idea if your in this for the long run

Hi, and thank you for all the info!

So far I haven't made even a penny with Hubpages. I know I'm doing something wrong, but am a little confused. My articles at Ehow are doing better, but still slow.

I have MS and its progressing, so I need to find a way to support myself from home. I've considered the Keyword Academy, but have wondered if its worthwhile. (I think the one dollar fee is only for the first month, then it jumps to around thirty.)

I'm dedicated to doing whatever I need to, and am trying to learn SEO. So thanks again for being willing to help. It is appreciated!

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 2 years ago

@Cydni

The price for the second month and for the subscription is $33, 1.09 per day? I wish I could show you just one of the introductory videos from their private files, but than agian they make everything Ive ever written about seo and making money with hubpages look like childs play..so maybe its better this way.

All I can say is I recommend the service as a client (like the hair club for men guy!) and I think anyone who actually follows along will make there money back and never require any help from anywhere else again.

I hope you do well and find a way to work from home and manage your MS, my Grandmother has been in and out of remission with a form of MS for around 12 years and she functions very well and is an alert strong person. I wish you the best

Thank you! Again, the feedback is appreciated!

In regards to TKA, do you think it is worthwhile if I only want to promote articles on sites like this?

I actually get e-mails from them (promotional) and I know they really advocate having lots of websites. I'm not sure if that's for me. I'd rather stick to article writing, if possible.

Again-- thanks!

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 2 years ago

http://thekeywordacademy.com/idevaffiliate/idevaff

check this out its the link to the first hubpages challenge, I cant say they advocate lots of websites - they in fact use lots of article writing sites to create link wheels that funnel traffic to one location, most people prefer to have that final site to be their own site or blog so they get 100% of the sales and commissions but one could use a hubpage instead.

I do think TKA is worth it just for the hubpages forums section and learning about how to properly search for keywords that will make money.

You could just try 30dc for free and learn about keyword research, but they do focus on websites..if you ignore website and think hub you will be fine

I do think that writing just enough to pique someone's interest so that they'll click on an Adsense ad is a difficult endeavor. But I'm learning and experimenting. At this moment, I'm having better luck with Amazon.

Really good article and now once again I am desperate to join TKA. I have also taken up 30 days challenge and so want to research my keywords and competition and then write. As of now I just write what comes in my mind and just add keywords after writing the hub. Now, coming to my problem, when i go to TKA site and try to sign up for the one month trial course, the paypal asks me to link my card. I just have a savings account and have no card. Infact I am trying to sign up through my brother's account, as he has $1.15 in his account which he received through a PTC site. So can't I just send money direct via mail from my brother's account to keyword academy and sign up for the course. I really want to boost my income. Also can't ask my dad to sign me up for the course as my parents don't know anything about my online endeavours and also they are a bit conservative so they won't approve. But once i start earning money I am sure they would be suprise and approve it. Newayz sorry for such a long story, I hope you can help.

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 2 years ago

Well, thats not a TKA problem, its a paypal question, but since I started off with making money online as an ebay seller, I got ya covered.

Personally, if you dont want to get a checking account through your bank (having one makes receiving online deposits when you are making money way faster!) I would get a pre-paid card from my local gas station or grocery to use as my back up funding

But, since the first bill at TKA is 99 cents ..you should have no issue signing up and subscribing if your balance is 1.15 ...paypal will always ask that you associate back up funding sources but as long as you have a paypal balance that exceeds your purchase, you can ignore their little prompts.

The second months charge for TKA is $33 , so if you decide you want to continue you will want to have figured out a way to load money into that payapl ..as i said , a pre-paid visa works just fine.

When you do sign up..I really suggest attacking the info like its a school class, do and create as much as you can within those first 30 days if its something that is working for you and you start to see your earning sbuild up ..then continue...if you dont end up using the service, dont forget to cancel as it is a subscription...you are signing up for and you will get rebilled if you dont cancel..and it sucks to get billed for things you are not using!

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 2 years ago

I should add, i wasnt in any way a noob to online content producing when I first took the opportunity to try TKA, I actually was already rather successful in my exploits, but I have stayed on for my 33 subscription fee gladly in order to access weekly webinars and use a couple of built in services that premium users get at the site. I def boosted my income many times past the paltry 1 a day that the service costs

englightenedsoul profile image

englightenedsoul 2 years ago

Thank you so much for the advice..You are a nice soul. I would surely try my luck again. I think my brother has an prepaid visa card. And thanks for letting me know that i would have to cancel my subscripton before they charge $33 as i was under the notion that It would be automatically canceled. And also I wanted to know your referal link to TKA...I would like to join through you. And once I join the course I am going to eat up all the knowledge they have to offer!! Thanks again sunforged.

englightenedsoul profile image

Sunforged I would also like to keep using their service but for that I would have to be as successful as you....But I think the trial would help me to get my first adsense check( I am at 45$ in 2 months 10 days)...So I can keep up the service and use the forums and the tools they provide to my advantage. Thank you so much sunforged. I am really grateful to you!!

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 2 years ago

I think they make it pretty clear at the actual sign up page because they tell you two different methods on how to cancel..you can email them or you can just remove the permission in your paypal..so there is no trick to it..its an honest membership service but ill go back through and add that detail to the hub more clearly to.
