Keyword Tips - Analyzing Keyword Potential

Lets get right to it. If your here, you should have a basic understanding of what a keyword is and the understanding of how keyword tips on how to select keyword terms will drastically change your traffic and income potential.

Everywhere you go in this wacky online writing and marketing world, you will read references to finding that perfect keyword or advice that your writing or sites is not targetting the appropriate keyword terms.

Often, you are told to use certain tools, in order to glean the keyword gold from the muck of the net, but rarely does anyone want to explain what the protocol for a "good" keyword is.

You could muck about, like I did, and just try and experiment and fail and fail again, and then fail some more in the process of trying to learn what is going to work and allow you to succeed online. You could also save yourself all that time and join any one of the many free or paid training schools that offer this knowledge and support in the process of implementing it.

Taking a formal approach to learning keyword research techniques is not a bad idea, as a lot of bad information exists on the net. Finding trustworthy information online in this field is equally as hard as finding keywords that can make you money.

Picking Keywords that make money

There are 3 general concepts to consider in keyword selection, these keyword tips should save you time and effort.

  1. What is the search history and related profit potential of my keyword ?
  2. What is the competition for this keyword and related search queries?
  3. Is the niche topic and the human beings who search within it a 'Buying" crowd?

Keyword Tips for Google Keyword Tool

Basic Keyword Tips: The Adwords Keyword Tool

Google provides an amazing tool that gives you a snapshot into the search data it collects. 99% of Google's Revenue comes from advertising revenue, this tool, The Google Adwords Keyword Tool is intended for ADVERTISERS to select and create adwords keywords campaigns.

With a little modification to the resulting figures this tool can be used to very accurately estimate the results a PUBLISHER may return by creating high ranking content with a specific keyword focus.

I often open the tool with a specific general term in mind and as each list of results posts ..I can glean and research additional more focused terms that would never have came to my mind otherwise.

Below you will find one such process and the resulting keyword list.

I began with the term "mercury" - then "mercury poisoning" - and ended with "asbestos poisoning" -

For 90% of my research only two columns are necessary 'estimated average ePc" and "Global Monthly searches"

Picking the wrong keywords.

Did I lose you?

Did you run off to write about "symptoms of asbestos exposure" at $60 USD a click?

Lets examine why that is not a viable a choice of keywords.

First off. There are two advertising networks - Adsense for Content and Adsense for Search - these super high bids are so that the advertiser shows up nice and high on every Google search page - very rarely, does an experienced advertiser intentionally bid suc high numbers for the Content network that you are a publisher at.

For the purpose of this tutorial I just wanted some big flashy numbers. Unfortunately, I ended up with a selection of high priced terms that are quite well known, with the information provided by the tool above one could estimate the possible adsense returns of any high ranking keyword with some simple math. But one shouldnt bother writing or pursuing any of these terms without doing some competitive analysis of the top ranked and first page results for that term.

Estimating Adsense Returns for a term.

Global Monthly Searches of an Exact Phrase x estimated average ePc

(Asbestos effects ) 3600 x $10.75 = $ 38, 700

Wow! almost $39K a month possible in adsense returns...

No, not really.

First off Google has released that they share 68% with their adsense publishers so we need that quick addition to our estimation formula.

$38,700 x .68 = 26, 316

Still an amazing number for monthly returns! But, the formula is still assuming that every single visitor engaged an adsense ad!

Lets be optimistic and assume a 4% CTR -

4% of $26, 316 = $1 ,052.64

Well, i wouldnt shrug off an extra $1, 052.64 each month for one article! ..but to be more realistic - this formula was still assuming EVERY searcher picked our article when they searched .. so lets assume you do get in the Top 3 spots in the first page, theories differ as to what percentage of searchers select these results - but we will assume a modest 65% - as you gain experience and statistical analysis, feel free to assume any number you like, let me know if you find any vetted data in this metric.

$1, 052.64 x .60 = $ 631.58

(Note: If you were to write a Hubpage you have the additional adsense impression share to factor - 631.58 x .6 = $378.95 )

So we have gone from almost $40k monthly! to a more modest but still impressive $631.58 Profit potential via adsense monthly. This is a pretty practical analysis, If I could make over $500/monthly from this term, why am I sharing it with you?

Competitive analysis for ranking

Considering how much money could be made by a site or page that is optimized for this term.

Can I rank for this term?

My next step for selecting whether I can pursue this term involves the use of a firefox extension.

The two main choices for SEO plug-ins are SEO Quake and SEO for Firefox - I prefer SEO Quake.

So I search for the term " Asbestos effects"

Broad Competition results are About 4,630,000 results

Some formulas and processes online will take that in to account , I dont care about anything but the strength of the first page results, so I ignore this metric, you may not feel that way.

Exact Competition results are 3,230 results ( I dont care, who uses advanced operators besides SEO's anyway!)

What I do care about is the level of optimization, age and number of backlinks of the pages that do have first page and more importantly top 3 ranking.

The first thing I glance at is PR (pageRank), supposedly it is devalued as a ranking factor BUT it is a great quick estimator of my competition. I aim below PR5 usually and hope for much less than that as my competition. You can make a tidy return just finding completely non-competitive terms or perhaps you have a massive promo and backlink engine and are capable of taking on older more supported pages than I. Anyways, its a good first metric to eye out.

Our example has the top two results as PR6 .gov sites - I dont stand a chance.

The third result is an interesting PR0, I am surprised.

The fourth result is an obvious Keyword hunter site and is a PR0 - if they are any good, they have the jump on us, but maybe they are not any good?

The rest of the page is filled with PR4 sites that also happen to be .gov, state government sites and even a .mil site. At first glance, it really doesnt seem promising (as expected)

I already wouldnt pursue it...but what are those PR0's doing there?

Both the PR0 returns are pages obviously created to hunt after the term, one seems to be paid for by a Law office and is probably run by a SEO company.

Surprisingly neither has insurmountable backlink profile as shown by SEO Quake via Site Explorer.

Other important factors to consider:

Keywords in Domain - One of the PR0's in an exact keyword domain

Keywords In Title (allintitle)

Keywords in URL (allinURL)

If you find competition that is not optimized to those factors showing up on the first page and they do not have an insurmountable backlink profile - then you have found a keeper.

Competitive analysis can be quite time intensive but it is imprtant if your hunting for true money making keyword terms. If you cant rank you cant earn.

Competitive analysis is one of the main reasons to purchase an all in one keyword tool, the tools automatically consider these factors mentioned above and give you a quick way to measure without having to individually check as I have just done.

Keyword tips can bring you dollars!

Is it a buying crowd ?

Some terms and niches may post some great possible adsense numbers but still be duds.

Ask yourself..what do you plan on buying when you search for "free" things online. Advertisers are looking for buyers - what good is traffic under 18 that doesnt have a credit card? If you wrote an article that attracted a fellow online writer like me , would I be distracted by an adsense ad (No).

Consider the person on the other side of the keyword search query and whether they will make your advertisers money.

I personally avoid anything "free" ..anything that would appeal to a younger tech savvy crowd (if pursuing adsense returns) ..and anything under supported by advertisers.

But Adsense - is most certainly NOT the only or even close to the most lucrative network to be involved with ...its just a very easy method.

Monetization Strategies for your Keyword terms

Never forget that Adwords are bid on by other websites. Its a a lot of work and effort to build articles that attract the right traffic. Its more cost effective for many to just bid low for qualified traffic that you attract.

But why just get .50 cents to send buyers to someone else. If you have product knowledge or articles that attract buyers why not offer the items yourself. I rather get 4-10% of the sale of a $300 PC part any day!

So it is very wise to not only consider the possible adsense returns but also what products you can offer directly and get the appropriate affiliate partnerships to make that possible.

Just about anyone can get an Amazon partnership for 4-7% of the sale but many retailers offer 10-20% of sales to their affiliates. The only catch is you will need your own hosted websites to be accepted by most larger affiliate networks such as ePn and those in the CJ network.

Elements of the formula above are derived from the work Of Court,an Internet marketer who has offered advice on earnings and research for quite some time. In recent years, it seems they use the 3o day challengers as testing ground for all sorts of half-useful internet marketing tools. So, I say take everything you see there with a grain of salt. Hi SF,

Great tutorial on picking Keywords.

It seems that most people/hubbers are limited in good keyword research either due to insufficient knowledge or laziness. I tend to be in the second group!

Also I would agree very strongly with the points about competition analysis - some seemingly good keywords have extremely high competition level, sometimes from VERY established sites.

On the other hand, I have sometimes been surprised by success (very modest, but still there) in a seemingly tough area.

Sometimes I guess there is an X factor that may drop a good keyword in you lap.

By the way, well designed hub, especially the arrow just below this comment box. Rated UP!

Ive sent it already - it refreshes every 15 minutes - its intended for sending info to a "community" not as an actual chat mechanism.

Here is the link to the video - right now Im not sure the quality will be clear enough - its processing. But the important part is to check the toolbar settings in the top left and disable any extra options you dont want - if its not a logo on the toolbar, then I didnt intentionally put it there ..nothing wrong w/ the extra options but you should know they are there to disable if you like

People like me who have grown weary of Firefox crashes and freezes might like to know that SEOQuake works on Chrome and Firefox too (although I have seen complaints about Chrome, it works for me)

You can also use SEO Quake to quickly explore the backlink strategies used by other people. Just go to a page they have had for a while and drill into the link info. You can discover link wheels by drilling deeper and keeping track of where you have been.

I wonder if anyone has written an automated tool for that kind of sleuthing?

Great hub thanks for taking the time to share with us. Yes I made that mistake of taking the keyword of mesothelioma and writing a hub about it. Oh was it hard work. I got bored too and trudged through thinking the figures from the keyword research I did would earn me a fortune.

Truth is NOTHING doing. It does get a fare amount of hits but as you say the figures are fantasy plus I have NO CHANCE of being on the first page of Google. We live and learn, in my case the hard way.

At least you have saved newer hubbers from this same mistake with your excellent information here.

Another great article, as always. Worth every minute of reading.

I do have to say that there are definitely exceptions to the "free rule" you spoke of though. My most profitable website uses the word "free" in the domain and the word is mentioned throughout the site.

It all depends on the context of "free". For example, a domain name like www.freelegalconsultation.XXX would probably do very well revenue-wise, if it was done correctly. There are a number of situations where using the word "free" will actually improve SEO results. My own site has an Adsense clickthrough ratio of over 4%, ranks high in a number of key terms I aimed for, and my affiliate earnings are quickly catching up with my Adsense earnings. My average Adsense PPC is over $1 as well, which isn't bad for a domain with the word "free" in it!

Anyway, just adding my two cents. Keep up the great work!

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 18 months ago

@PC Unix, Good Point, I will make it more apparent that SEO Quake is Chrome Compatible, I believe it is clearly pointed out at the install page -

As for "spying" and discovering your competitions linking structure, that is done in its most basic form with google operators or with yahoo site explorer which is included with the seo add-ons.

All three of the keyword tools have advanced versions of this feature and keyword elite is specifically focused towards such endeavors.

The seoquake tool as options that include keyword spying of adwords campaigns, although the free version limits the amount of results and info it provides.

Thanks for swinging by

You know, it often crossed my mind that those with 0 pagerank around the higher pr'ers could be newly published articles yet to be indexed. It was just a thought - what do you think?

I did have a look at Dales 30 day challenge and thought it didnt really offer any more to what I have learned through trial and error. Also, if everyone is doing Dale's challenge, it makes the original concept void because the competition is high. I think that if people look for unique ways of doing things, then this clears competition - before everyone jumps on the bandwagon! This is why I like the 60dc - it is a niche and unique team effort.

@shaz, yes it is possible that the PR0's are receiving a "fresh content" bonus - they are of course already indexed - as they appear in the search results but they could be waiting for the google dance to be complete. i dont think its the case in this specific example - but it often is.

Is it possible to know all you need to know in order to be successful at this? I can only liken it to an iceberg. I can see the tip. It is amazing and huge and if I spend a lot of time examining it and viewing it from all angles, I come to understand it. But then I find out that there is another 90% submerged and It will, at my current rate of understanding, take 400 months to get it all. That's only 33 years! I will be 95 years old and my house will be paid off.

Thanks for shaving off some of those years with your erudite explanation...I'm glad you forced yourself through the boring parts for us.

Very interesting hub on a topic that is getting more understandable, though still a bit mucky for me. Either way, I have been wanting to do some of what I like to call "anchor hubs," or basically hubs that have more earnings potential to allow me more freedom to pursue what I really like to write about. Politics. I've done a very tiny bit of playing around with keywords and SEO, but haven't had superb results...

This puts me one step closer to figuring out at least a bit more of what to look for, and perhaps what to avoid as well. So thanks.

Sorry to bug you w/ questions... but I just tweaked the Adwords Keyword Tool to look the way your example did. When I tried basic words from each of my topics of choice, the $ amount for all was pitiful. None of them were over $10 and most were around $2. Does that mean I have chosen low paying topics?

TattoGuy 18 months ago

Awesome hub my friend, thats what I love about hubpages, you learn something all the time. I read an amazing article last week about keywords that made me think. This guy went on about not worrying about getting high traffic to one of his blog posts, he reckoned that getting just 25 or so hits a day suited him because it was targeted traffic and out of the 25 hits he got 4 clicks each paying about a dollar, so thats like $120 a month just for one blog posting. Learning all the time but jeeez my earnings are growing, good luck moi friend.

@tattoGuy - My favorite hub only gets 20-40 views a day, position #1 for exactly the term i want and a steady $3 daily with the occasional $25 bump - it has done so for 2 years!

Its not about traffic levels, its about getting the right traffic to fit your needs.

I come back to this hub again and again as it has all the necessary information for me. I have marked it as awesome, beautiful and useful. I voted it up also. I just wanna know how to find out high paying keywords as I search in google keywords tool, most of the time I find keywords CPC 0.05 $ - 1$. So how can I find the high paying keywords list???

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 17 months ago

@devsir and all - I showed the search terms I used to find this list.

quoted from above = I began with the term "mercury" - then "mercury poisoning" - and ended with "asbestos poisoning" -

These are highly irregular, if your finding keywords that are $1-$3 dollars you are doing just fine. If you are asking me questions about finding words worth more money, you are missing a major point.

1000 at .05 a piece is still a good return. Try a little harder. If I massive lists of keywords in the $20 dollar range, i would have robots answering my comments while I snowboarded the alps with my private helicopter.

Remember, these keywords are most definitely used only on the search network at these prices.

Love this hub. Lots of great information, but I have a question. I checked out micro niche finder and wanted to watch a couple of videos before signing up. The issue I have with this and other sites is that the videos I watched are 4 years old. I just wonder if some of this information is still relevent or if once you purchase the product you get updated information. Also, I know generally principles remain the same, but I worry about how quickly things change on the internet or if the age of the information should even be a concern. Any info on this would be appreciated.

Wow! A LOT of information to process. I was refered to your article in the forums by livewithrichard. I'm bookmarking this for future reference, as it is far too much detail for my to simply remember when I need it.

I just hope I can make a go of it--as I have zero interest in 'selling products,' so I don't write articles trying to sell anything. I hope only to write intersting articles that folks want to read, and perhaps some ad will be properly related, and trigger their interest. I have no illusions of making it rich by these means--only to gain a bit of extra--it would be nice, at least, to make it to the payout threshhold each month!

@rehanna, We used to call that "celebrating useless keyword victories" it was common in the HP forum. But, its not useless, because you can see a bottom metric for what you know you can rank for, now just attempt to tackle terms with more competition and income opportunities, with some testing you will find the sweet spot that allows you to rank and capture maximum traffic with minimal external promotions
