Getting started with your own blog

Making your own blog is easy!

A lot of mystery surrounds the world of making money online. An entire industry exists solely to mystify new users into thinking that the tools required for online income creation are difficult to obtain or understand.

This is simply not true

If you can compose and send an email than you to can have your own space on the web.

In this article I will explain the very basics of making your own blog in a step by step systematic manner. There are of course dozens of sites and methods to go about doing this, I will simply showcase the very best and most proven, I will also assume that you wish to be able to make money from making your own blog even if it is not your primary goal.

If this is your very first step into the online publishing world, i suggest you compound your new blog with an account here at hubpages , as it is certain to assist you in your learning process and give you speedy monetary returns which should keep you motivated.

If at any point you get hung up on vocabulary terms please refer to the

Internet Marketing Lexicon here in another tab.

I suggest actually opening another tab and following along with the tutorial, you can never have enough blogs and websites, you will learn that quickly as your profits and understanding of google search engine ranking methods increase.

Tools needed to for making your own blog

In descending order of difficulty and professionalism

Method 1: Free hosted Blog through blogger.com

A Google account is required, your site name (domain) is limited to a subdomain at blogspot.com. ex) www.MyfirstBlog.blogspot.com

Benefits: Incredibly quick and seamless site creation, ability to include affiliate ads and run Adsense and other advertising networks. Uses widgets to increase site functionality. Very easy to learn, little to no learning curve. Ranks well in Google. Allows adult content.

1000's of predesigned templates to make your site look and act professional without requiring any technical knowledge.

Great for creating quick sites for testing purposes or using as backlinks to other sites.

Drawbacks:

Since the site is not self hosted, many Publisher networks and all pay per post programs will not allow you to use the site in order to first apply to their programs. For example, PepperJam Network a great next generation publisher network offers 50/month for 5 blog posts about their service, but does not accept sites that are not self hosted.

The limitation of using a subdomain can quickly come back to bite you in the ass if your blog reaches any type of popularity.

So if you are for real about making any income from your blogs, do not take this route, use some forward thinking and at least purchase your own domain name.

What about getting a domain?

Blogspot allows you to associate your own domain with their blogspot location, this means you can send people to

MyPurpleApe.com instead of MyPurpleApe.blogspot.com, the SEO (search engine optimization) benefits of this are legion.

Do you need the internet marketing lexicon yet?

Just think of a domain as your address, its much better to have your own identifiable and/or keyword rich address than a random PO Box or apartment number - branding, memorability and search engine optimization are all deeply affected by this small factor.

New registered Domains cost between $7.00 and $12.00 per year, anything more is a rip-off.

I use Godaddy for most of my domain purchases because I prefer to have them in one location for management and its the most popular service that allows free transfers among members, one can find good keyword rich domains on ebay for $1 or $2 pretty regularly, i have purchased some real gems this way.

Godaddy offers a 7.49 special coupon, this is my primary draw to them

Making a WordPress Blog

Do Not use Wordpress.com - They do not allow advertising, you will never be able to profit from your work, if you must go the free route, stick to blogger.

I will outline how to purchase hosting and create your own Wordpress site on your own self hosted location in the next installment.

For around 60/year you can be the master of your own site and have unlimited options. Everyone should have a couple of blogger blogs and I encourage you to create 2 or 3 immediately, even if you dont get to them now, aging them will help you in the long run.

I am beginning to get a handle on this blogging thing! My first blog totally sucks btw :) but I didn't know squat about blogging back then (use it for back linking these days as its a google one). I have been reading and learning a lot since joining HP and this hub has given me the idea that I should use a self hosted blog. Lucky for me hubby n I have a web hosting package (for his sites) that allows us as many domain names as we can think up! We could even go into business selling domain hosting (tho I have no idea how to do that successfully). Reading your hub kept me from making the mistake of trying to build a blog with a free wordpress blog! While working with a spouse can more difficult then working with anyone else I might have to get him to help me get set up but then I can take it and run with it :D. Thanks for the hub!

I'm bookmarking, so i can try to digest this great hub. then i'll give Blogging another try again.

Great solid answers about webhosting, free hosting sites are for grandmas and people with no interest in making money online it seems. Well done.

Fantastic information here. I have learned more from your hub than a book I bought on blogging. Well written and easy to understand. Bookmarked this one for later. Voted up and useful.
