If you have held an iPad in your hands, get used to it. This oversized iPod like device has no built in way of propping up or viewing without leaning against the wall or you laptop bag or some other clumsy way.

iPads need an iPad Kickstand

Some people actually had this type of issue with the smaller iPod, a clamshell phone and even most new phones with keyboards can be set in a way where one could just watch a short youtube video or listen to mp3's without having to hold the device or prop it against something. For closed source video, pdf reading, youtube and photo viewing and really taking advantage of the games and apps available for the accelerometer and larger screen - the iPad can be very cool. But oddly, most of these uses are best served handsfree with the iPad propped up - so, I really think its a bit of a rip-off to not have some sort of built in kickstand functionality, one that was inset to the case would have been great!

Also if you plan on really typing very much on your portable iPad device then you will certainly want an extra iPad keyboard and the ability to prop up the iPad during use. there are actually a pretty good amount of cool add-ons (arguably things that should have been in the stock design) available via the ipad dock functionality
