Why buy USB 3.0
USB 3.0 also known as SuperSpeed USB is poised to be the next protocol change that you should be paying attention to. As early as 2007 a new USB standard known as USB 3.0 was introduced and the specs have began to be integrated into modern computing hardware.
Superspeed USB is fully backwards compatible but also opens up a whole new world of speed in data transfer abilities.
SuperSpeed USB - How much faster is USB 3.0 over USB 2.0
USB 2.0 is supposed to work at up to 480mbps but is more likely to run around a 320mbps transfer rate to compare USB 3.0 or Superspeed USB can run a transfer rate of 4.8Gbps which is an incredible boost in capabilities.
This increased speed can be very useful for transfer of large files between high capacity external drives especially if you often read/write directly to your external - the speed and ease of file transfer between your PC and camera or media phone should be impressive also.

USB 3.0 = SuperSpeed USB

USB 3.0 and Power Management
USB 3.0 also offers massive increases in power management - at almost equal rates to the increase in data transfer capabilities comes a power transfer capability that should allow for much faster charging of mobile devices and phones.
USB 3.0 capabilities combined with wireless USB options should begin the charge to the eventual completely wireless office and personal networking of all your components.
Negatives of USB 3.0
Like most high quality signals some loss is expected at longer ranges, USB 3.0 abilities are expected to meet or beat the 3 meter length (in relation to gigabyte size transfers)
One can use hubs or signal extenders to be sure of maintaining the full capabilities of USB 3.0.
The price of USB 3.0 cables is very low athough the cost of hubs is a bit more then the USB 2.0 alternative.
Is USB 3.0 Backwards compatible?
To be very clear - YES - USB 3.0 cables are fully backwards compatible with your USB 2.0 and USB 1.0 ports.
In order to unlock the speed capabilities of your USB 3.0 cables all elements of your link need to be 3.0 capable - i.e. USB 3.0 PC ports, usb 3.0 cabling and USB 3.0 device.
Comments
Thank you for explaining all about USB. For me it was a revelation hahaha. It is true.
so I cannot use my usb 2.0 hard drive with a 3.0 cable?
if it is backwards compatible
@ocbill - yes, you can , thats what BC is - you simply just need a full chain of 3.0 ready items to unlock the capabilities of 3.0
