An History of Therapeutic essential oils and flu protection by Thieves Oil
The anecdotal story of the history of thieves oil is very interesting, perhaps its fable but it does explain the name well.
...during the 15th century plague, 4 thieves were able to make quite a living for themselves plundering the dying and dead for their riches. They concocted a mixture of aromatics that protected them from the dreaded plague, they were eventually caught and were given the ultimatum, death or reveal how they avoided the plague. They chose to give up their recipe!
Main Components of the essential oil: Thieves oil : Defense from Flu and other airbornes
The fabled recipe was a mixture of wormwood, meadowsweet, juniper berries, rosemary, camphor, sage, cinnamon and cloves in a base of white wine vinegar.
Modern recipes of the Thieves essential oil:
- Clove Bud Oil 200 drops
- Lemon Oil 175 drops
- Cinnamon Oil 100 drops
- Eucalyptus Oil 75 drops
- Rosemary 50 drops
If you are unfamiliar with essential oil mixing, I do not suggest using this recipe as your first experiment, both cinnamon and cloves are quite strong in oil form. Young Living is a very respectable brand, one of which I personally use, some sources are available above.
Modern research about the effects of Thieves oil
Doctors S. C. Chao, D. G. Young, and C. J. Oberg published a study in Journal of Essential Oil Research 10, 517523 (Sept/Oct 1998) while working with Weber State University, Ogden, UTs similar study was performed and confirmed findings at Brigham Young University
Abstract:
A proprietary blend of oils containing cinnamon, rosemary, clove, eucalyptus, and lemon was tested for its antibacterial activity against airborne Micrococcus luteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus.
Process:
The bacteria cultures were sprayed in an enclosed area, and Thieves was diffused for a given amount of time. There was an 82% reduction in M. luteus bioaerosol, a 96% reduction in the P. aeruginosa bioaerosol, and a 44% reduction in the S. aureus bioaerosol following 10 minutes of exposure.
Conclusion: Diffusion of the oil blend, Thieves, can significantly reduce the number of aerosol-borne bacteria.
Personal Experience with the Thieves Essential Oil
Im not one to immediately embrace any holistic or alternative medicine. I do believe in their effectiveness but I always do my research before attempting any methods.
I am not the best guinea pig for this particular product, I haven't been sick in any way since 2002, (almost 8 years), this corresponds with my lifestyle change towards a vegetarian diet (actually, Pescaterian) and working yoga and meditation into my daily regimens.
So, i cant be sure that Thieves oil has any direct benefits to me, when I am exposed to others who are sick or am going to an environment that is risky, I use the thieves oil on my neck and chest, I also include one drop in my Echinachea tea.
But, Thieves oil has been recommended to me by practitioners who do not have an immune system such as mine and they swear by the oil as both limiting their illness times and preventing them from infection during high exposure times in their treatments of patients.
Thieves oil can be diluted and used as a household cleanser very effectively and has an amazing aroma. Diffusing this oil in your home during the holidays can help protect everyone from spreading infection and leaves a very pleasant, spicy cinnamon aroma. Even if you do not have a diffuser a few drops on a light bulb can create the same effect.
After reading the effects of Thieves oil on mold, I used it in my bathroom which has no windows and a failing exhaust fan. I didnt follow any scientific process that I can describe, but simply by diffusing the oil in the room for a week the mold and mildew that i previously would have to directly fight with bleach stopped developing.
I still diffuse weekly in the room and have not had a reoccurrance yet.
University of Manchester study Results

Thieves Oil destroyed MRSA 100% ( Antibiotic resistant Staph)
