Online Earnings Burning a Hole in your Pocket?

Online Writers Survival Package and Wish List

The end of December is a great time of year for most online writers and marketers. Your bank accounts and online dashboards should be showing all sorts of extra zeros from the mad shopping sprees that your visitors took part in from Haloween, Cyber Monday and Black Friday and the ever-increasing Christmas Shopping extravaganzas.

Its a good time to have an online based income.

But, things are probably going to drop down a bit for you and now while you have all that extra cash on hand its time to be smart and invest in your business and education so that next year is even bigger!

I have highlighted a collection of items and resources that have helped me in my journey to work at home and support a family solely through a keyboard and an internet connection.

Some items such as the UPS for your home office are absolute necessities while others like the Numbers DVD series may just help you in molding your mind to fit the online landscape.

Security Tools for Writers - Power Surge and Loss Protection

.

UPS System for your Office

Whats a UPS? Why should I have one?

Not every online writer is a technical whiz or gadget geek. This can often lead to some very crushing problems when you are dependent on technology to keep food on the table.

A UPS, is an Uninterruptible Power Supply, sometimes also known as a battery backup.

Most offices that have networks designed by IT professionals will have UPS systems in place. Your home office probably does not have one.

The UPS will provide two very needed services for you.

1. Your home power supply has natural spikes and surges, a computer and its own power supply are more prone to damage from these spikes than most electronics. At the very least a surge protector should be used, but a UPS can keep a constant voltage running. This is good for your computers health.

Do you know how to replace your computers Power supply?

2. The battery in a UPS will keep your system powered during a blackout. My UPS has one PC, one monitor, my wireless router and my cable modem plugged into the battery protected side, it has an additional set of surge protected plugs for another computer system and my All-In-One. When winter storms or high AC use blows a fuse or I lose power, instead of having my whole system just drop - losing anything I may be typing and causing possible damage to the hardware, I simply calmly save my open documents and shut down my computer.

If you normally use a laptop you may be used to the security a battery provides during power loss, but unless you have a powered modem and router you would still be in the weeds.

So get a UPS! It tops my survival list as the most needed item for a home office.

They are NOT expensive, they offer the same utility as a surge protector which you normally would pay around $20 for and offer the extra safety of the backup - the selected UPS systems range from $30-$60, they are worth it.

Redundant Security for Writers - Backup your Data

Most writers and web designers should have systems filled with important notes, perhaps files of backups of all your online content, Keyword strategy csv's, artworks for websites, financial files, story drafts and all sort of other creations that CAN NOT be replaced.

Depending on just one Hard drive is absolute idiocy.

Hard Drives fail, memory reconstruction from a failed drive is very, very expensive. We are talking clean rooms at $100+ an hour.

Buy yourself an external drive, these drives come with software that can be used to schedule backups, Windows 7 has the utility built right in. Your data should be protected with multiple levels of redundancy. Extra storage is very, very cheap. Buy a drive this moment if your content and data doesnt exist in multiple locations already.

Some Nice Treats for Your Home Office

These two items aren't necessities, but they have been invaluable for me.

A Nice Big Whiteboard - I love my whiteboards, when my new home office is fully wired and designed I will even post a picture. Whether its jotting downa quick idea, sketching out a new logo, or keeping track of private promotional strategies, whiteboards are the way to go.

Plus they make your office look like an impressive war room rather than a stuffy little hole.

A Top of the Line System - If you work online you already have a computer of some sort. But, as your empire grows your needs will too. Most beginners can get by with something that can surf the net, run a word processor and well that's it. That is all you really need. But, when you have a high powered machine you will know what you are missing and opportunities will open up for you. Video marketing is one of the waves of the future, processing and making your own videos is intensive, automated software that can provide exhaustive keyword research for you is often intensive, it will lag your old systems down, or maybe you will get a bit lonely working at home alone, skype and other video chat options may help you stay connected. This Alienware machine is the type of sick future proof device you may want in your corner.

2012 Educational Reources for Online Writers

Increase Your Library = Increase Your Opportunity

I know ... where are the eBooks!

I still like the feel of paper in my hands and there is no shortage of excellent resources available in print, even for this rapidly changing field.

I consider the following 5 books to be indispensable.

Never be short of opportunites to write

2012 Writer's Market Deluxe Edition
Amazon Price: $26.63
List Price: $49.99

Did you know that magazines and periodicals still pay regular writers for content. Ok, Im kidding, but when I see skilled writers and researchers expounding on the joys of making pennies per click or their awesome $5 upfront payment from Associated Content or Demand Media, I am always perplexed.

This is the Writers Market, you should get one every year. The Deluxe addition showcased above, offers an online component with more opportunities, up to date and new publications and further tips on how to market and organize your work.

Learn to write specifically for Sales and Conversions

Web Copy That Sells: The Revolutionary Formula for Creating Killer Copy That Grabs Their Attention and Compels Them to Buy
Amazon Price: $13.74
List Price: $21.95

Writing for the web was not something you learned in school. The rules are different. People are far less engaged, they are in a bigger rush and they likely have very specific goals.

This book will do wonders for your conversion rate. It will.

You can read a more in depth review at Guides to Writing Effective Web Content , but please hurry back!

Get inside the head of an Online Searcher

Click: What Millions of People Are Doing Online and Why it Matters
Amazon Price: $2.01
List Price: $25.95

Did some of my lingo confuse you?

What do you mean, our readers are less engaged? How can we know peoples motivations just from what they search for, can we really predict their next actions or forecast upcoming trends.

Yes.

Read Click, its inexpensive and its written in a very down to earth, anecdotal style, that will jump start your brain into a new way of conceiving how you interact with your readers and what motivates them (and yourself)

This selection by Joseph Sugarman is a must own for anyone who wants to develop content that drives sales.

The lessons are great and easily accessible and the style of writing is a lesson in its own. You will be amazed how a simple story about the authors interaction with a waitress can quickly impart you with secrets to how to convert your sales better.

I consider this particular selection to be the basic primer but all of his books should be in your library. Splurge a little, this knowledge will pay for the price of the book.

I have never been much for the "Self Help" section. I am more of an action man. But, Napoleon Hill is a noted exception. You will find mentions and quotes from Napoleon Hill's books dropping out of the mouth of everyone of your idols, You just weren't in the know, to recognize them!

A fun way to learn to think in systems

Numb3rs: The Complete Series
Amazon Price: $82.98

Numb3rs - The Complete First Season
Amazon Price: $16.66
List Price: $29.99

When and if you start trying to dig into the nature of search algorithms and get an understanding of how concrete and real world factors my be turned into 1's and 0's its just down right confounding.

Well, unless, you are a math whiz or computer scientist, but then I would wonder how you were drawn to a "writers" list.

Numb3rs was a fun and long running show on television that showcased a genius mathematicians ability to predict real world events such as bank robberies, abductions and bombings based on pattern recognition and other 'mathy" stuff. It did a lot for me in regards to opening up new filters to view events and trends by.

Excellent Hub as per usual Sunforged! :) I have bookmarked, so I have easy access to sharing it. I'm unable to think of anything to add and at this time I don't have any question, but if I do think of something or a question, then you'd be the first person I'd ask. :)

@Cagsil - I appreciate your comment, its been awhile since I published a new Hub and you have reminded me of one of the joys, quick feedback from cool online friends!

@Goodlady - A signed copy of "Click" , thats awesome, I first bought it two years back after reading the Hub Author, Darkside's recommendation of it. I used the info to write a series of hubs that almost immediately and to this day makes me money. I literally took the niche directly from the book .. and it worked! I consider the rest of the books to be equally valuable and just as accessible.

@mike, hope that means you earned some money to burn this year! Thanks for the support and Happy New Year to you too!

A lot of what you suggest is bang on! I actually like the whiteboard idea, as I tend to have a field of post-it notes all over my desk.

For your backup, although an external disk is good, may I suggest you read this:

It is a great solution and has removed my worries of losing files.

Great hub, voted up, useful and awesome.

@UW - Thanks, I always appreciate your visits and feedback

@Randy - The price cant be beat, but if I felt one of the other Kindle guides was better done, i would have included them instead. A buck or two can be spared by most, but the free guide is really good!

@Ardie - I like what you write :)Let me know as your earning/learning journey progresses, If I have resources that can help you, I will pass them on.

Hey Josh, this is a must read for beginners and veterans alike for those who are like us that write online. Being the geek that I am, I definitely recommend and support your tech suggestions on this hub.

I let every one know now that for backing up computer info I always suggest massive redundancy through my BUCH method - Burnable media, Usb media, the Cloud & Harddrives. Same backups, 4 different places. And I tell them it's a must.

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 4 months ago

@Emie Happy New Year to you also - I think any of the books would be a worthwhile use of your gift card. I own them all. Just put in my order for the 2012 Writers Market myself

@Brett - The "filter" I was coming at this article through was "how to spend all this extra amazon cash" , lol, so I didnt sway much from the amazon catalog. But, I do use redundant backups and multiple cloud storage options. Kangaroo Jase's suggestion below yours is a solid combo.

@Jase, I absolutely agree. My suggestion was geared towards those that have no backups in place. Creating a solid and redundant data backup plan is a must for any serious business ... not just for writers!

@Katie - I stand by these recommendations. I own them all myself and selected them as being the most integral. Many are items one wont know they need until they have the use for them or would have trouble learning the skills within without a owning a structured guide.

@Austin - I actually took that picture to show off the little netbook. It was the first day I moved into a new house ... the office and the entertainment system are on a whole new level now! Ill add a pic once I defeat this babies plan to deconstruct it

As an online writer, my wish list is to have software that can take dictation with 100% accuracy. Although it is true there is Dragon Naturally Speaking speech to text software, it is just shy of 100% accurate.

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 4 months ago

@BlissfulWriter - DNS is a great suggestion! I found after going through the training period that DNS was very smart and accurate. but, Im not so smart and accurate that i can compose right from the top of my head, so it doesnt work for my own workflow. It used to be a popular tool with a breed pf "writer" that would submit dozens of articles to the lowly and hopefully dying cesspool known as Associated Content. They would find PD works and old library texts and just read to their PC!

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 4 months ago

@Barry - You can get every product on this page (except the super computer Alienware eye candy that could probably launch a nuke and make you coffee) for under $100! USD. You could probably try a library for most of the books too, between Inter-Library loan and ebook sharing, one can get anything these days!

or just buy through my link :) .. its the one that says sunforged! ... skip any hubpages trackers please

Nice list. I already have UPS, external hard drive and even an extra computer. I also invest on learning resources(unfortunately I am only piling up books not reading)quite a lot. I could buy a white board to help me in my backlinking strategies. I may invest on a Voice recognition and Bookmarking software to better myself.

I noticed that you did not mention anti virus/spy softwares. I have known many people using sharewares which I don't think is a good thing. Don't you think so?

sunforged profile image

sunforged Hub Author 4 months ago

@Anamika, I was trying to make the list "fun" and Amazon focused. Based on the pretense that many of us have a good chunk of change waiting for us from the holiday shopping sprees by our visitors.

But as "luck" would have it, I spent nearly 12 straight hours fighting and removing a malware package from my backup computer (currently, my main computer is waiting for a new gpu) If it wasnt for my android phone and the little white netbook pictured above, i never would have been able to uninstall it.

Sadly, the awful little rootkit that got me ... wouldnt have been stopped by any existing AV, paid or free! and it was injected via advertising! ... I was going to write two articles related to the experience.

1. How to remove ping.exe/zeroaccess rootkit and XP Antivirus 2012 malware combo (Rogue Name Changing Virus)

2. How to create a (More) secure system

But, Im still to angry at all the lost time!

So yes, everyone should have an AV ... but surprisingly, as of late Microsoft Security Essentials gets the most credit from the AV/malware forums I frequent and thats free! Its more important with the ever more intelligent viruses to have a good handle on keeping weak points like Java/Flash fully updated, limiting browser plugins, using a non-admin account to browse, testing in a virtual environment when using "sketchy" software like the shareware you mention and even lesser known tricks like changing your drive letters! (most viruses target "c" drive .. but there is no rule that your drive has to be called C!) ... and before I sound like a hypocrite .. my main PC with financial data and client backups was near bulletproof ... this backup ive been using for the past month was months out of date and configured by a less wiser me many years ago :)

As for the "piling on books" comment ... I have that problem also, i have gottten into the habit of getting audiobooks or using the text to voice options on ereader programs, in order to multi task whiel chasing the daughter, three animals and new house with all its "charm"
